Medford has .probably' seen e
last of 11-year-old "Sergeant'
Frank, erstwhile musical mascot of
the seventh company, C. A. C, at
.Medford, and also of his Hither, E
Holstein, who has been under eapoin
ago there uy secret service men as a
German spy suspect. Katlier ana
son left Medford on Friday morning
for .New York City, as Holstein
claimed, where he said the boy would
study tho violin under the famous
Xtmballst. However, it was learned
that Holstein had purchased tickets
to Grants Pass only.
The Medford Tribune has the fol
lowing to says of the affair:
Holstein, who speaks broken Eng
lish, first appeared here Beveral
weeks ago with the boy, and .they
soon appeareu at the seventh com
pany armory, where the youth's
splundld work on li.o cornot and
bugle mado him a popular favorite
and he was adopted as mascot. Hoi
stein's constant presence around the
armory and attempts at eavesdrop
ping when oflicers conferred soon at
tracted conspicuous attention,
that time on he has been closely
watched. Both father and boy say
Ihey came to Medford from the Mex
ican border and that they wore with
Pershing's expedition into Mexico,
and that Frank played with the First
United States cavalry band lu that
expedition. Holstein nlso claims
that un older son enlisted in the
Fourteenth United States cavalry at
that time. Ho admitted Friday morn
ing at the depot that In 1914 when
the war broke out ho left San Fran
cisco with his family and went to the
Tahiti islands, w here, because he was
a German, ho was placed under ar
rest. Hard work on tho part of the
American consul there, he claims,
soon affected his release.
Holstein has kept In closo touch
with local military affairs ever since
he has been here. Last week when
company I. O. N. G., of Woodburn,
which is stationed on duty in Med
ford, removed its headquarters from
the seventh company armory to the
Cuthbert building, Sixth and North
Central, Holstein soon afterwards
rented tho house on Six street, im
mediately in the rear of tho Cuthbert
building, and moved In with his fam
ily, his wife and an 18-yoar-old
son having arrived In tha city in the
meantime.
It lias also been learned that Hol
stein and "Sergeant" Frank have
been goings to townB south of Med
ford as far as Montague, Cal., where
the boy would play musical Instru
ments In small theatres. It is claim
ed that this was but an excuse for
Holstein to ride back and forth nlong
the Southern Pacific railroad to
learn where guard patrols of com
pany I were stationed.
Sergeant Brooks, who has charge
of recruiting In Medford for the ma
rine corps, saw Holstein at San Di
ego a year ago loitering around the
military barracks there.
