tween Ashland and Eugene, the tele
phone company Is having a difficult
time to keep its lines open. At
about nine o'clock thiB morning the
toll lines between Oakland and Cot
tage Grove went down under r the
weight of clinging snow and for sev
eral hours no communication was
available between Koseburg and
points north of Oakland.
It was only a few minutes aftor
the lines had gone down that the
perfect system established by Wire
Chief H. M. Pierson had located the
trouble and men were on the scene
making repairs. Mr. Pearson rush
ed every available man to the scene
and in spite of the tremendous odds
communication was resumed again
this aftornoon about four o clock.
In addition to this trouble on the
main line, a number of the rurU
lines leading into Roseburg, ware put
out of commission and a new of
men arrived In the city about noon
to make the neeaed repairs on these.
Douglas county has many miles
of-telephone wireB and their care is
a task the enormity of which is not
realized by the laymen. In spite of
this fact, however, Mr. Pierson has

ening to attend the elk-meat ban
quet of the Eugene lodge of the Or
der of Elks, says the Eugene Guard.
Plans for the banquet are in charge
of Elmer Roberts and the details
have been nearly all worked out,
Robert Baker iB to be the chef for
the occasion, and he is preparing an
elaborate menu, on which the roast
elk meat will -be the principal part.
The roast is to be prepared In Harry
Korn's bakery ovens, and will be 1
cooked for the greater part of a day.
Bill Hayward Is preparing a pro
gram of sports, which will Include a
number of boxing matches between
locnl Elks and at least two boxers
from outside. Vaudeville entertain
ment Is being prepared by other
members of the order and an orches
tra will be on duty all evening.
T. O. Russell, who was In Rose
burg the first of the week, states a
number of the Roseburg Elks prob
ably 25 or 30 In number, will be here
for the feed, and all of the traveling
men, members of i.e order, who
make this territory, are hoping to be
In Eugene for Thursday evening.
The hide of the elk which was kill
ed for this feast, Is being prepared
