PROPOSED TO EXTEND RAIL ROAD TOCOAST Three Branch Lines Will Join at Common Point. WILL TAP HEAVY TIMBER DISTRICTS Vuiipuufert himI romitei'!f With Whom IMiutM Huve IUt;n tola ciishinI lire Faro rub lo (xi rmjHMiHlon. With the railroad spirit rampant in tho western country and especially in Douglas county, there conies an other project, which, should it be carried out will be one of the great est benefits for the county ever planned as yet. The system which it is hoped to devolve will Include three branch railroads each tapping a heavily timbered district and all combining at a central point in a branch line which would reach to the rcoast. Willi the completion of the Roseburg and Eastern Railroad Rosebtirg will have finished a large part of her share in the proposed de velopment which is being discussed. According to the plans being for mulated a railroad will be built from the holdings of the Neenah Lumber Company and the Bradford Culvor Lumber Company and the other companies operating in the South Umpqua district, to a point near Riddle and then in a north westerly direction to Looking Glass. From Roseburg, the Roseburg & Eastern Railroad will be extended to the same point while, the Iloach tim ber interests will be aske'd to extend their railroad from Sutherlln In a southwesterly direction to connect on the lines at a point some dis tance west of tho city. It Is then proposed to continue the three lines to Coos Day, providing a outlet Tor the three heavily tlmber d districts at the sea coast. Mr. Von Ostrnnd, one of tho heav iest owners of tho Neenah Lumber Company and Mr. Bradford, senior partner In the llrndford-Culver Com- puny are now In Douglns county and havo already expressed' ihontselves as favorable to building a road from their timber on the South Umpqua out by the wny of Riddle. It would 'e a very easy matter to continue his line for a short distance and In 'his manner connect it on with a 'ne from Roseburg nnd Southcrlin With tho project which has beer proposed by Mr. Wllscy, of a rnli "ad from Marshfield to Roseburg, t seems that should capital look avorahly upon tho matter It would 'io a very simple matter to carry out the plans of the promoters, j Already several of those Interested i In plans of thls nature have express i ed their opinions holding that such ( a protect was entirely feasible and i would undoubtedly be a paying pro position should it be carried through. ' This plan would allow an excellent i egress for the timber of Douglas county and would be of great value lo the country. Many of the com panies now holding timber in this j county would he able by the means of these branch railroads to cut their timber, haul it to the sea coast and dispose of It at a great profit. The three roads and the main line ! would tap the richest timbered lands of Douglas und Coss counties and In case the plans are carried out a won derful development of the great re sources of this county may be ex pected. With such plans ns have already been formulated nnd such work ' project of the three-line railroad Is ft logical plan. Already the Roach Timber Com pany has completed Its (plans for the railroad which will tap the rich Calapoola district. Their rights of wny have been obtained, all court procedure finished, the engineering work done and all awaits the con tract for construction. The negotia tions for the Roseburg & Kaste-n . railroad which will be tributary to one of the greatest timber districts In the tate are rapidly ncarlug the place where active rortrnr!!on will hon. With thrno nrnloets showing that cieltal Is becoming Interested In the development "f Dougl.l ronn tv. It is only logical that the thlid Vxreat watershed and timber dis trictthat of the south rmrni'.-J area should he Included In the' great Improvements which r to he j made. Then with mutual help nnd nil working toward the one end. It Is not considered a dif'Icult proposition lo extend tho lines to the seacoast, where the Uimher may be much inoro easily exported to the foreign markets. As yet the matter Is very early in the promotion stage and very little has been done, but It is expected that within ' near future more sub stantial developments will take place.
