Tecretary Baker Issued a statement about 5:30 o'clock after a lengthy conference with the presi dent, saying the immediate mobiliza tion of all the national guard had been determined upon. Feverish activity was manifested at tho war department throughout the day with secret conferences un!n-! terruptod only by luncheon between Secretary Baker, Generals Bliss, Scott and Mills. Before Mr. Baker departed for the White House Brigadier General M. M. Macomb hastened to the war de partment with "war plans". A large" force of officials was call ed to the department to perfect the details for transporting the troops. AUTGS LEAVE EARLY IN HORNIM Many Clni lnThat Beauty is Even Greater Than Tliat of Columbia Highway, Now Oregon's Most Beautiful Thoroughfare. Over three hundred people yester day made the trip from Roseburg to Tiller to inspect tho work done on the Crater lake cut-oTf road. Owing to the threatening aspect of the weather, many who had planned on making tho trip did not go and only about u-e the number of cars which had been expected left the Umpqua -'-' f--M-prtn the hours of six seven. ' Tho ride to Tiller in the early hours of tiTT; morning was extremely pleasant. The air was cool, but not cold, a great relief after tho heat of last week and after reaching the ihoro mountnlnous sections it was rofreshing and invigorating. At noon Tiller was tho scene of a very large picnic gathering. All had brought lunches which were spread ,mdnr tho magnificent trees whose shade afforded an escape from the rays of the sun. Immediately after lunch tho party which had been increasing in num bers all along the road started on the tour of inspection of the new high way, which Is destined to become one of the greatest scenic roadways in the United States. Tho work is pro gressing rapidly and construction haH now been completed to a point about two and a half miles past Tiller. It Is of the finest construction pos sible in the road line. In many places It has been cut from almost solid rock and In every Instance the road bed is Bmooth and wide. It follows for Its entire distance thus far along the banks of Elk creek, one of the most beautiful streams In the county and the beauty of the scenery from the road fa morn magnificent than that of the much heralded Columbia highway, according to many who have traveled over both.
