About the last of this month Uncle Sam will begin putting up the first of several thousand new design letter boxes all. over the country. The box design Is the Joint product of the Post Office Department in Washington and the Art Commis sion of New York. While the design for the front was accepted by the Post Office Department, the design for the ends is still subject to some modifications, the. design for the whole being termed somewhat con ventlonal by the Post Office off! clals. The preparation for a design for the new boxes was taken up by the Art Commission 1n April, 1914. It was at first proposed to mount the boxes on pedestals, bu this was disapproved by the Com mission and the conclusion was reached to affix them to electric light poles. The Edison Company of New York offered a design, but it was so ornate that the Post Office Do 'partment declined, on economical grounds, to consider It. The Art Commission then asked that the IPost Of Ice Department appoint a committee to confer with the com mlBslon regarding a design for the box, and this was done. There were frequent conferences, with the re sult that Charles Kech, a sculptor was commissioned to make a design Upon suggestions made by J. A. Ed- gorton, purchasing agent for the Post Office Department, Mr. Kech made a model of the proposed letter box and It was the subject of several long conferences. Mr. Kech's de sign provides for a box of regulation size and shape. The front bears on the upper curve the word "Letters and at the bottom "U. S. Mall". The handlebar and letters Bllde ere aim liar to those on the boxes now In use, DRINK HOT BEFORE BR EVERY I WATER WAST HRftlG Hopes every man and woman 4 here will adopt this splendid health habit. Says a glass of hot water with a teaspoonful of - limestone phosphate in it washes poisons from system, and makes one feel ' clean, sweet and fresh. "Wliy is man and woninn, half the time, fooling nervous, despon dent, worried; some days head achy, dull and unstrung; some days really incapacitated by ill ness. If we all would practice the drinking of phosphated hot water before breakfast, what a gratify ing change would take place. In stead of thousands of half -sick, nnaeniie-looking souls wVth pasty, muddy complexions we should see crowds of happy, healthy, rosy cheeked people everywhere. The reason is that the human system does iot rid itself each day of all the waste it accumulates under our present mode of living. For every ounce of food and drink taken into the system nearly an ounce of waste material must bo carried out, else it ferments and forms ptomaine-like poisons in A! he IkwoIs which arc absorbed into the blood. Just as necessary as it is to clean the ashes from the furnace each day, before the tire will burn bright and hot, so we must each morning clear the inside organs of the previous day's accumula tion of indigestible waste and body toxins. Men and women, whether sick or well, are advised' to drink each morning, before breakfast, a glass of real hot water with a teaspoonful of lime stone phosphate in it, as'a harm doss means of washing out of the stomach, liver, kidneys and bowels the indigestible material, waste, sour bile and toxins; thus cleansing, sweetening and puri fy ing the entire alimentary canal before putting more foodinto tlio stomach. Millions of people who htid their turn at constipation, bilious attacks, acid stomach, sick head aches, rheumatism, lumbago, nervous days and sleepless nights have become real cranks about the morning-inside bath. A tpiarter pound of limestone phos phate will not cost much at the drug store, but is sufficient to demonstrate to anyone its cleans ing sweetening and freshening effect upon the system. but care was taken to provide more effective action. The design for the slides was an American eagle with wide spreading wings but without feathers, this being practically im possible In ipressed steel, of wblch the boxes are to be constructed. The design for the front of the boxes proved acceptable, but the eagle was deemed rather convention al, despite the contention of the Art Commissioners, among whom were Mayor Mitchell,. Robert W. de For est, president of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and John Qulncy Adams, assistant secretary, that the design was highly artistic and should be adopted. The Post Office Depart ment subsequently prepared a sub stitute design for the ends show ing a shield with the letters "U. S." and a wing above it. The Art Com missioners disapproved of the sub stitute design, and Mr. Kech went to Washington and urged the ac ceptance of the eagle design. The new boxes, of which several hundred thousand are to be placed in all cities of the' country, will cost approximately $6 each.
