Tho person who anticipates future
conditions, or commonly speaking,
"Builds air castles" may bo rightly
gained a dreamer, or an optimist and
his fondest hopes may fail to ma
terialize, but tho old adage "Better to
anticipate brighter days, even though
they never come, than never to hope
f.t all" still holds good. The individ
ual who cannot see beyond the clouds
is worse than an agnostic or a skep
tic, anil is rightly named a pessimist,
or an obstructionist. Boiled down
to the final analysis the word "Hope'
is the main spring of life, remove
this inspiration from the human
heart, and the future holds little
sure fur lum, this condition is
Just a tnh in the development and
i.U ancomoiit of a city as It is in
tho individual life, and the passing
of time has witnessed the decline
and decay of many once promising
communities, simply becauso the
spirit of pessimism and doubt dom
inated, and the life of Industry and
progress went out, and instead of
the busy, hustling activities inci
dent to a wide-a-wako industrial
center, the "store box whittling
bnuch' were much in evidence. The
f ut uro of our beautiful little city
hangs In tho balance, opportunity
that we have so long courted knocks
at our very door for admission,
Shall we open wide the door and
bid her enter, or shall we build an
obstruction wall around us so high
that the natural resourcs of this val
ley wllll continue to lie -dormant
while our neighboring communities,
with the spirit of progress are forg
ing to tho front. There may be
a few votes cast against the futwe
growth a.nd development of Rose
burg nnd Douglas County next Mon
day, It would be strange if this were
not the caso. We believe, however,
that 90 out of every 100 votes cast
will be for a greater and larger
Hoseburg; a contented, happy peo
ple, full dinner pails and continu
ous prosperity.
