I hereby announce myself as an Independent candidate for state sen ator from Douglas county at the general election to be held next No vember. I have been a resident of Oregon since 1853, and of Douglas county since 1900. Am a farmer and stockman. I believe in fewer laws, and that they should be enact ed'only after most careful considera tion; that they should be much more simple, direct and easily understood. I believe the permanent prosper ity of Oregon must depend largely upon agriculture, livestock, and lum berlng, and that theso industries should receive just encouragement in the way of better roads and better credit facilities. I believe also that the prosperity of the cities and towns are as much dependent upon the prosperity of these productive indus tries as are the rural communities. I believe an officer Is, or ought to be, the servant of the people. I believe the accumulated wealth of the country should pay Its just proportion of the taxes, and that the public money should be spent with greater care and economy. Needless officers and commissioners should no more be tolerated In public than in a well regulated private business, and if elected I promise a squa deal to the best of my ability. W. C. EDWARDS, pd. The gifted authoress of this popular song was Mrs. Norton, a grandaughter of the famous Richard Brinsley Sheridan, born in Eng land in 1803. Her songs of "Bingen on the Rhine" and "Juanita" were very popular. She died 1877 and lived to hear the echoes of her plaintive "Juanita" come to her from nearly every civilized country in the world.
