WASHINGTON, April 21. The
German government has agreed to
permit exportation to the I'uited
States of 15,000 tons of dyestuffs.

Hernstorff, the German ambassador,
to Secretary Lnnsing.
The communication explains that
while Germany refused at first to
permit exportation of dyestuffs un
less they be exchanged for American
goods now excluded from Germany
by the British blockade, after care
ful consideration of the situation it
has been seen "that this blockade
has resulted ill serious embarrass
ment to those American industries
which are In need of dyestuffs," and
the imperial German government
now Is prepared to make "a single
exception" In permitting exportation
in this instance. It Is required only
that the dyestuffs shall be consum
ed by American manufacturers and
not ro-exportod to Great Britain or
her allies.
It is expected that the state de
partment immediately will make rep
resentations' to Great Britain to in
sure the Bafe arrival of the dyestuffs
in this country.

Sarah Flower, born nt Great Harlow, England, in 1805,
married William Bridges Adams, a civil engineer, in
1834, and for his sake gave up the dramatic ambitions
and career to which she had looked forward.
"Nearer My God to Thee" was written by her in 1840, and
first published by the Rev. William J. Fox, at London,
in a Hymnal for his Church.
Later, the air to which it is now sung was adapted to it by
Lowell Mason from one of Sir John Andrew Steven
son's "Irish Melodies." It will be remembered that
President McKinlcy, just before his last farewell, said,
It is God's vvay. His will be done, not ours," and
whispered, 'Nearer, My God, to Thee," and on the
Sunday following, in many churches (as on Thursday
at the funeral services) this great hymn was sung by
thousands, not only in Protestant churches but by
Catholic cathedrals, and notably at a Memorial Service
ordered by King Edward VII, in Westminster Abbey.
