This may ho all right pro viding the nation agalnxt which this aolomn warning is Issued bus not arrived at the game conclusions of tbe little boy, whoBC father always threatened to punish the next time he transgressed tho parental rules, ut who never put tho" threat Into execution. Repeated admonitions without punishment, having convinc ed him that no punishment was In tended, obedience was cast to the winds where disobedience would an swer the purpose' better; for exporl nco Jiadtaught that the only disci plme would be the warning not to do It again. It'lB doubtful, lo use tho most charitable torm, for tho facts are that today, this country Is near er on nctual break with some of tho nations, than It has been during many yours of Its past history. One of tbe largest real estato transactions that has been made for some time In this vicinity was mado yesterday when H. L. Marsters of tbe firm of Perrlne & Marsters, exchanged bis fine 141 acre dairy ranch on Deer creek for the Ci. W. Priest stock ran oh on Oak creek, comprising about 1500 acres. The Marsters ranch is considered one of the best ranches for its size in the Roseburg vicinity being high ly Improved and close to Roseburg, while the Priest stock ranch Is Con sidered one of the best stock ranches in Douglas county, having good Im provements, considerable land In cultivation and well watered and fenced. The titles have been chang ed, but each will hold possession of his former ranch until fall when each will take possession of his new holdings. The deal was mado through the Perrine f Marsters real estate firm. So that when the lum bermen themselves passed that way, soma weeks later, they could not loosen It to take It on with them. They had to leave it there In Mr. Gater's- undisputed possession. Of course such an event as that made quite a stir in the river. A great garr fish, with dozens of little garr fish swimming at safe dis tance, so as to safely bear all that might be said, swam up and eyed the log and the alligator who dozed upon It. And when, after a long sunning, the alligator slipped back into the water, the garr fish, keeping 6 very safe distance from those great jaws, of course, remarked, "That's a very nice log you have, Mr. Gater; juat such a log as you have been want- Mr. Gater blinked knowingly and fnother creature climbed onto th agreed, "A very nice log. For the man who loves vigorous ad venture, there is no better vacation than to spend n couple of months in f Itzerliind, shooting cheese. At intervals we have stated that, of the three types of goitre, the sim ple goitre of young girls Is curable by good general medical treatment i plus patience; the cystio goitre, tho largest goitre, is Incurable by any known method except surgical' x clston; and the exophthalmio goitre, which Is only part of a seri ous systemio disturbance shown by marked nervousness, palpitation, rapid heart, prominent or bulging eyes, tremor and general weakness, 1b curnble In three-fourths of tbe cases by careful medical treatment plus complete rest, and In about one-fourth of the cases the disease Is so severe, the general strength and life Itself Is so much endan gered, that operation must be re sorted to ns a heroic meusure. Still a great many people wrlto to ask if wo will "kindly recom mend a cure for goitre." As woll ask a doctor to suggest a good remedy for general weakness or tlint tired feeling. Sometimes oven sltnplo goitre, which causes no symptoms other than the annoyance of the lnrga neck. Is operated upon when It falls to respond to simple treatment, rnther to Improve the patient's ap pearance than for nny other reason. in the average surgeon's hands the operations usually performed for exophthalmic goitre nro fairly successful, though by no means a radical cure, such as you would ex pect In an operation for hernia or Keeping siuow. Thus, of liH pa tients operated upon for exophthal mic goitre in one of our best clinics mid traced afterward, 55 wore re ported cured; 2 2 patients con linued at times to havo mild re lapses under the effects of nervous, strain, though pretty well most of' the time; 7 were Improved, but had still some evidence of the old 'rouble; 5 were slightly Improved; 8 failed to derive benetlt from the operation: 9 were operated upon a second time; 21 died. 7 of them soon after operation. Thus ttio operalion for exophthalmic goitre is to bo considered a fairly successful, but not a radical or surely curativo trentloeoi The best outlook for a patient with exophthalmic goitre is ar early course of medical treatment, aided by - prolonged ' rest -an open air rest cure, if possible, such as that commonly employed for incip ient or' early tuberculosis. ' This method of treatment gives 75 per cent, of cures, a better record than the best surgery can show though of course surgery Is the resort of the worst cases. The damaging element In exophthalmic goitre Is the excessive secretion of the thyroid gland, which produces all the alarming symptoms. The en largement of the neck may be so slight as to escape even a physi cian's notice, yet the patient suf fers the nervous and circulatory symptoms in a ' marked degree. And the disease is seen in men and women, and from the age of three years to the age of sixty.
