NEGRO SONGS
The only negro songs that -will ever find a
place in the history of music, were com
posed by the slaves of the South before
the great war between the states. All
folk songs originate among a peasantry.
And the only peasantry that ever existed
in the United States were the negro slaves.
There have been no negro melodies composed
by that race since 1860. And as the con
ditions that then existed have vanished,
never to appear again, it is safe to say
that the original slave music is the last
of its kind.
"Heart Songs" contains a symposium of old
