Ware Ilosohiirg to he substituted for Portland, the article -would be Just as applicable to this city as to the metropolis. It goes to show the value of tho advert. b Ing contained In these thousands of loiters mailed to every part of the country. "Have you received n Invllntlon to visit Portland, Ore., during the rose festival next June not a form al invitation, printed or engraved, but a very personal and intimate Invitation in the neat hand of a pre sumably charming Portland school Sir? If not, do not despair. Tho invitation Is probably on tho way. The Portland school girls cannot -wrlto to a million pnihpuctlve guestH all at once, though they are evident ly making a brave effort to do so. Tho artfully artless Oregon let ters now flooding tho cast are good advertising. They cultivate both the nrt of letter writing end local pat rlollsm among the Juvenile corres pondents. Portland has reason to ho proud of lis roses ropes twelve months a year anil especially of lis .lulin festival. Thero will lie a great falling off In visitors from last yoar and the school girl letters will hardly draw as many visitors as the const expositions did; but every re cipient of a letter will want to go. and some may not ho able to resist tho Inclination." She states that it came to her mind that pure oil, such as olive or castor oil, was so healing In its character that it might be applied to this wart on a venture. It could at least do no barm. She rubbed the oil into the wart every night, then bound It up with oiled silk to protect the bedding, after she had tied a piece of oily absorbent cotton over the wart. The treatment thereby was going on all night After several weeks of tills the wart disintegrated and came off In tiny particles, leav ing no trace of a scar. It sounds like very good advice, and worth trying. There are quicker ways of getting rid of these blem ishes. One way is to tie a white silk thread tightly around the base of the wart After a few days, it will be seen that the circulation has been so strangled, that the wart dries up, and will either drop off in portB, or can be filed off gently as it drlea up. Very large warts on the faco, especially those having stiff hair growing from them, had better go under the care of a skin specialist, whose method is treating with electricity. Childhood is particularly prone to warts, none of which are serious. They generally disappear of them selves. It is only a matter of con cern when one comes in an inconven ient place, where it will get bad treatment, such as our correspondent tells us about with her own child. Health Talks BY WILLIAM BRADY, M.D. Acule Aad Intoxication In Chddren The cominnatiox of ".stoiniu'h-itclio," vomltiiiK ttud feverish). ess in a child Is generally termed acute indi-sl l.m, biliousness, "worms," or muylinp appendicitis. And while It mlsht be ony of these, excepting "biliousness," there is an explanation not commonly offered but j very frequently found rhUit in finch i cases, and that Is acid intoxication.' Symptoms IndicatiiiK acid iutoxl-. cation are a peculiar heavy or sweet- i Ish breath and repeated vomitlne,, llrst of partly digested food, later of blle-titiKed fluid or pure bile, Vomit-' Ing recurs every few minutes, after an interval of restlessness and burn ing In tho stomach. Following the vomiting the child seems tempor arily relieved, but tho distress re turns presently and seems to Incronso until vomiting recurs. At the samo time the child becomes more or less feverish, usually more, nnd some times a trllle delirious. Those symptoms nro alarming to the parents. Thero is tho dread sus picion of appendicitis or other seri ous cause. Hut if the abdomen Is sensitive to touch the tenderness is not localized, but general, and now here, now there. The remedy is an alkali to neutral ize the acids which cause the symp toms. A tnhlospoonful of soda (salerntus) dissolved In two-thirds of n glass of water may be giver, hi ono drink or In several drinks. The child craves alkalies and will tuko such a dose readily, and with marked relief soon afterward. Milk of magnesia is another alkali useful In tho treatment if adminis tered In teaspoonful doses every hour until relieved or until tho-ouh catharsis Is produced. "Um-m," was all that Mr. North Wind replied, because he was think ing his hardest, trying to make up something for the waterdrop to do. "You don't know what hard work Is," said Mr. North Wind positively. "Then I'd learn something," said the waterdrop, "and that's exactly what I want to do!" Then he con tinued his wishes. "Or I'd be a tree or a hill now If I was a hill, I could see all over tho earth! But being only a waterdrop, I cannot even seo yonder shore, so near. Oh, yes, a waterdrop's life is very stupid." "So you think you would bo hap pier If ydu could seo the shore?" asked Mr. North Wind, because he wanted to bo sure he was pleasing the waterdrop before he made any suggestions. "Yes! Yes!
