The University of O'egon Asso
ciation met last night at the Com
mercial Club, and discovered that
Judge Rice was a member of the
body, and won hi help In the cam
paign before November 4. In addi
tion to officers chosen last week,
Miss Helen Hamilton was elected
treasurer.
President Germond appointed on
a committee for resolutions, Mrs. R.
M. Smith. Hon. Albert Abraham.
Miss Helen Hamilton, and R V.
Strong. On advertising, Walter
Fisher, Dr. George E. Houck and
M. R. Germond, the president, will
serve.
One argument presented at the
meeting last night was the fact that
the $175,000 for the university is al
ready raised. It Is not a question of
imyine the money, for the taxpayers
already have paid this sum, but the
questions is will the state university
lie ullowed to use the money, or will
it go to some other fund, as the leg
islature may direct.

capable of enduring all the hardship
of outdoor life. A medical certifi
cate to this effect is required. The
examination consists of two parts
field test and the answering of prac
tical questions. The latter relate to
land surveying, timber estimating,
lumbering, land laws, mining, and
the livestock business. Practical ex
perience and general intelligence, as
shown by ability to write with reas
onable clearness of expression, are
the main requirements. Applicants
must he residents of the ft ate in
which they seek employment, and
should be familiar wi!h local indus
trial conditions and topography.
From the list of successful endi
dates, l he government selects new
men for the forest service, who are
appointed as militant forest ranger;--at
$1.1 00 yearly salary. They are
eligilde to promotion later to high
er tirades. Including vacancies !n the
portion of deputy supervisor nnd
supervisors.
These field men rangers and as
sitjiiit warmers transact tlie busi
ness of the national forests under the
direction of the supervisors. They
conduct thp government's erasing
business, handle small timber sales,
build roads, trails, telephone lines,
and cabins, flirht forest fires, and es.
timaJo timber..
When necessary (tie ranger must
own and maintain bis cvn F iddle nnd
pack animals. Wringers Mrn'-ntlv
ns'llgned to a forest, are provided
with hendnna-t'.'rs eoni"'n;; of cab
ins, barns, n r i 1 Wieds ami with er.mc
n;ricu!tural land to grow food for
their families and domestic animals.
The government in announcing the
nrewnt evaminati'ni calls attention
to tho fact lhat appointment in tho
forewt service does not .guarantee
year-Ions employment, since It is
necessary to fitrlnpgh a number of
rangers durintr the winter niont bs
when their services aro not needed
on the forests. "Preference is uiven,
however, to feVloiigbed employees
whose services are sat isfai'torv in
recruiting the force at the beginning
of a field season.
Applicants can secure information
concerning the examination from the
U. S. Civil Service Commission,
Washington, D. C, or from the for
est supervisors, at the places nam
