F. Ryan, the New York financier,
was the Drat witness called this
morning In the campaign fund In
vestigation, He gave his occupa
tion as a "farmer." Ryan testified
that in 1904 he opposed the nomina
tion of Parker and favored Gorham,
of Maryland. After the nomination
he laid the adherents of Parker ask
ed him to contribute to the cam
paign fund to the extent of $50,000.
Later he gave small amounts aggre
gating in all (100,000. Toward the
end of the campaign, Ryan said, he
contributed $300,000 to pay election
debts. Ab a result of this giving
every campaign debt was liquidated
when the fight closed at election
time. He contributed In this lavish
manner because be did not want the
party to dislntregate and be disgrac
ed by a cloud of unpaid accounts. Ry
an said that every dollar was from
himself, and In no way represented
corporation or business Interests.
.. George W. Perkins, of New York,
was the next witness. He said his
occupation was that of "a retired
working man.'.' Snld that at the
prcient Ifcime, ihe was .wonVtng ,18
hours a day to secure an eight hour
law. He declared that he did not
know how the republican campaign
fund for 1904 was raised, but that
he contributed between $50,000 and
$75,000 to the total Bum used.
Mrs. J. W. Perkins entertained
about thirty of her friends last Fri
day afternoon at her beautiful home.
The rooms were tastily decorated in
autumn flowers and leaves. Cards
and sewing were enjoyed by the
guc.'-..d. Delightful refreshments were
served.

PORTLAND, Or., Oct. 21. Very
little news, except cheerful news,,
comes Into Taft headquarters. This
Is true of all parts Of tho state. The
president is gaining everywhere. One
worker In Portland, who went out
among the railroad men, got one hun
dred of them to exchange little
bronze bull mooses for red Taft but
tons, and he did this in a single day.
This is typical of things that arc
happening all over the state.
Hon. C. N. McArlhur leaves Sat
urday night for a week's speaking
tour in Grant' and Wheeler counties.
He will talk at Dayvllle, John Day,
Canyon City, Prairie City, Fossil and
Mitchell.
Welter L. Tooze, Jr., of Dallas,
has just completed a very successful
speaking trip through Columbia
county. Although there are but one
thousand men, women and children,
in the city of St. Helens, he had on
audience of one hundred and fifty
persons on the evening of October
15. He addressed an enthusiastic
audience nt Clatskanie, Thursday,
October 17.
Judge Stephen A. Lowell, of Pen
dleton, addressed an enthusiastic
meeting at Heppner on the evening of
Monday, October 14.
Hon. Wallace McCamant, of Port
land, spoke to the people of Wheel
er, Gilliam and Morrow counties, at
tneir Trl-county fair at Condon on
Thursday evening.
A rouBing Taft Club has been or
ganized at Tillamook, Oregon. Capt.
W. 1). Stlllwell, who was a member
of the first republican convention ev
er held in the state of Oregon, was
chosen president of the club. An ex
ecutive committo was Belccted, made
up from every precinct In the coun
ty. As ninny of the republican com
mitteemen in this committee are hull
moosers, this executive committee
chosen by the club will furnish a
means of doing effective work In the
county.
The republicans of ClatBop county
are up and doing. A headquarters
has been established under the di
rection of C. W. Halderman, county
chairman, and J. S. Delllnger, state
committeeman, and quantities of lit
erature are being sent out from there
to voters of this northwest county.
The young men's Taft Club Is
thoroughly awake and giving active
assistance to the state committee In
the work In Clatsop county. Many of
the leading young men of Astoria be
long to this club and it did much
good work for Taft In the primary
campaign lost spring. O. W. War
ren is president and C ,T. Crosby Is
secretary.
A political meeting will be held In
Tillamook Saturday, October 19,
when Senator E. W. Haines and
Judge V. H. Hollls, both of Wash
ington county, will speak to the vot
ers on Tuft policies. The meeting
will be held under the auspices of
the Tillamook Taft Club.
Hon. C W. Fulton, of Portland,
will speak to the students of the
University of Oregon at Eugene on
the evening of Thursday, October 24,
and will speak at Medford October
26, and Ashland, October 25.
The campaign in Wallowa county
is progressing nicely under the lead
ership of Jay H. Dobbin, of Wallowa,
and F. A, Clarke, of Enterprise. Hon.
John A. Carson, of Salem, will speak
at Wallowa on the evening of No
vember 1, and at Enterprise on the
evening of Nopember 2.

conduct a vigorous campaign and to
carry Douglas for tthe republican
ticket.
