WKDNKKDAY, KEITKMI1EH 4 1012 IJ5T THE TlttTII JiE KNOWN, "Wo realize that tor the past year Roseburg has undeservedly had to bear the burden of a so-culled news paper continually andf persistently knocking every movement of im portance. ThlB nut only Included proposed new enterprises, but the general reputation of the city, both financially and otherwise. We do not propose to discuss that dcspls nble sheet, which hypocritically pre tends to represent a highly moral element, for, according to current re ports, its chief sponsoi-H have a rep utation unfit to be delineated In a family newspaper. Such "holler than thou" pretenses as It puts on nre thoroughly disgusting to thoso who know what is back of them. Rose burg, is. In fact, one of tho best law abiding towns In tho state, yet this persistent detainer Is frequently de claiming In big typo and grallng headlines of "dens of Iniquity" which It claims to be cleaning up here. - That such "dens" have existed mainly In Its own perfervld Imagination, as well as the most of the other alleged crimes it bo frequently heralds, makes no difference with tho decidedly un savory reputation It Is giving to town abroad. People here at home know there Is no "reign of lawlessness" In Tlosoburg, but Just the reverse. Tho live business people of Roseburg should gok together without delay and glvo notice to the knockom and scandal-mongers to "move on," as we have no ronm for them." From Last Night's Review. The abovo Is an extract taken from an editorial appearing In hint night's Issue of our esteemed contemporary, Tho Review. Tho News pleads guilty to the charge that It publishes the now a. This paper ninkes no discrimination of tho iiowb items that It publishes. It will print the facts as they hap pen from day to day, be it the Indict ment of men prominent in the busi ness affairs of this city or the misfor tune that may befall the humblest of our citizens. We take It that the ruuctlon of a newspaper Is to print tilie news, not withhold It or pcrju dlce It. That newHpnper which does not do so Is iinralthful to Its trust to tho great muss ot common people whom It Is printed to serve. Tho newspaper belongs to tho public. The public nt largo not any one sot or group of Individuals owns tho pa per. Wo have not been In tho news paper business as long ns our brother of tho Review, but In the short, time that wc have been a Journalist 1 vn have consulted and studied the highest authorities on Journalism In tin effort to give to t'no public a new- J -paper which, so far an newspaper Ideals 1b concerned, strives toward j the beHt. We have read with great Interest and, much liiHplrnt Ion an address given recently b Tuleott Wil-1 Hams, director ot thu Pulitzer School of Journalism, and ono of the things that made a deep Impression I on uk was the following: "The ! journnllst walks buiwoen the living mnssos and dead knowledge. Tho true Journalist's 11 fo Is bullded Into tho structure of society. His first duty Is not to tho Individual, not to tho class, not to party; It is to his community, whether it Is a small town or a great city. Newspapers have established the fact that it In In the existence of evil and not the publication thereof that the wrong exists. We cannot exclude the foul air of tho sewer from our house un less wo clean the Fewer." l.ouls T. Qoldlng, publisher of tho NewtM'ress ; In nn add rest before tho class In journalism nt the University of Mis souri said "No newspaper can hold favor which Is not devoted exclusiv ely to tho public Interest, indolence In tho public service will nut be overlooked. No flirtation with boss or predatory Interest, no arrogant t'uforcement of personal views, no let tins down of pmruntUonal tand urds, no decline Hi thu Quality of service Is permitted." And these nre the ideals that wo keep constantly before us as wo edit and puMUh The News. We fall short of tho mark frequently no human being can reach perfection but It Is our effort and desire to conduct this paper so that the public that great body of good citizens may know that this paper Is serving their interests and Interest! alone. That we have at least the support an dconfldence of a goodly number of the cltlienship of this comnuiuUy wo believe to be true and in addition we have material evi dence of it as may ite seen by re ference to another puis of this edi tion. But let us get back to the extract quoted above. Our brother of the Review Bays that we "have persistent ly knocked every movement of Im .portanc," including Jas well '"the general reputation of the city, both financially and otherwise." ThJs is a serious charge were It based upon any facts. In the first place this paper has ad vocated through Its columns every worthy enterprise tbat has been launched in this community. It has urged new settlers to come here not only through the paper but by hundreds of personal letters as well. It fully realises and understands the groat commercial, agricultural and Industrial future of Douglas county and with a firm and steadfast belief In this future It has done as. much a It can to help bring tho settler. It hns consistently stood for civic Im provements of all kinds. It favors the building of a! railroad to the coast and has and always will en courage anil support worthy promo ters and Investors. It supports with an open hand and heart all officials who are courageous, fearless, honest and scrupulous In their fidelity to their public trust. j The News does not take the stand j that vice and corruption should be 1 shielded from publicity. It does not I believe that tho publication of Im moral conditions in this or any other communty retards the growth of the community. It mnkes decent people everywhere know that there In tbat particular community there Is a news paper which Is fearlessly holding out to the glare of publicity those evils that undermine and corrupt the community. The bawdy bouse, the blind pig, the dealer In Illicit goods and wares, the crook, the man of a double llfo all seek security In dark ness. The minute they are held up to public view by a press which fears not their Blander, their vituperation, their threats, the loss of their busi ness, their underhanded methods, their offers of friendship and as sfatanco; that minute the Influence Is gone and tho community 1b batter off. The statement Is 'made by our worthy contemporary that the "dens" that this paper has from tlmo to time called upon the officers to raid have existed mainly In our Imagina tion. Yet If this extremely high minded editor of the Review would examine the records of City Record er WImberly's docket be will find a number of convictions and oleas of guilty there by women who weis arested for conducting a bawdy bouse. These arests and convictions or pleaB of guilty are directly trace able to the action of The News In ex posing their existence here. If this bfj "knocking" then we wre glad that we nre a knocker. The police officer of this city would never have acted In these cascB had not The News taken the stand that It did. This paper kept fearlessly on In Its crusade even In the face of an attempt to blackmail Its editor by a trumped up afldavit signed by one or two inmates of the bawdy houso. lint their effort failed and that particular woman and the In mates of her house have gone from Roseburg for ail time. Every community the world over which Is not fortunate enough to have a press tbat will not wink at. Immorality or that will not shield the evildoer Is dying of dry rot. The people as a whole want to see their community prosper and It will only prosper when their is a wholesome, pure atmosphere surrounding tho civic and moral conditions of that town. Does Tho Review think that It can drive Tho News out of business? One would think so by reading the last sentence of the paragraph quoted. The sentence Is a direct call to arms of the advertisers of thin city to cense their patronage of this paper In order to make The News "move on." Tho News knows Its .advertisers better perhaps than does The Re view. It believes them to be men whose Judgment cannot be swayed by such terms as "scandalmonger" or "knocker." The business men of the city advertise In this paper because they get value received for tho money spent not because they are phllonthropic and want to give away their money. The News Is here to stay. It has stood the abuse of Tho Review and Its small cotrele of followers of many years. It has grown from a small four page paper Issued once a week to an eight page Keister's ladies' Tailoring College l;OOM 2)I-2M KliOOlt, I'l.ltkl.NS IIUI I.DIMi. OI'KN SKIT. 4TI1. Audit has grown because tlie public tho peo ple have confidence in its integrity and sincerity. And that Is why it is the big paper both in number of pages and circulation . that it is today. No, Mr. Review editor do not flatter yourself into thinking that you can fool ttie people all the time. You have tried to fool the people long enough. Tho facts of the case are that in your article last night you thought that you could bolster up the waning cause of a curtain group of men in this city whose end on the grip of a fairs is about over. Too long has this group fastened itself upon this fair city. Its ten tacles have been tn our city govern ment, they have been In our county government, but not so strongly en trenched there, they have tried to in ject themselves Into the policy of the Commercial Club, they are now making a last and forlorn fight to keep control of those things tbat they have bad. Hut thore Is an urroused citizenship that is tired of this do mineering group In our city affairs Tlie citizenship will no longer toler ate these conditions. The people must rule and not the group. The prist three months hns been a period of unrest, n desire to break away from tho yoke of oppreslon. The News has seen It coming. Every citizen who stops to consider has seen It coming and Is glad. No longer will this arrogant clique control this city and community. The day for throwing It aside Is not far off. And the mouthpiece of this group. this clique of manipulators Is our -steemed contemporary. The Hose- burg Review. It barks when It m called upon. It is silent when told to be still. The News lias tried to treat its contemporary with fairness, it has never taken up the cudgel . gainst The Review until driven to it by tho littlest, most contemptible neers that one paper could :gaint another. There Is no spark of manhood In such articles as appear ed In The Review last night. Wo venture the abortion that the only I'oople who took It literally are those v ho Inspired It. The News Is owned absolutely by 'he man whose name appears at the t-tp of these columns. H owes al legiance to no one except its rend or? ml to them It owes all. On their support It rets contented. M arc no better than the average man and no worse. We are human not !a snurling hound. The roog citizens of this town are with us In our fight I lor a clean town and riddance of the j yoke that has encircled this com I muiiity. Tho fight has -just begun j and when It is over this community will breath purer and- fresher air. j Let all good citizens be prepared to use their strength in the fight now In ! progress to the end tnai Roseburg i may be a better, bigger place for the I settler who will be proud to come. A Statement Of Fact. The publicity department of tho Roseburg Commercial Club depends ! for its funds on public spir ited t people In this communty. All people j do not contrhuto to this fund. Their reasons for not doing so are perhaps good. Hut this fund boosts Uosc j burg more than any two or three oth er kinds of advertising. The Even ing News believes that this publicity department is dong good work. It encourages this work to the extent of a ten dollar contribution each ionth. We wish that we could give more and we hope that we will be able to do so in a short time. But we are a knocker according to our worthy prince of good fellows, the editor of the Review, who has not glveu a single solitary cent to this publicity fund for eight months. Truthfuilness, your name was never REVIEW. The News last night received a postal card from Edward Singleton who is attending the State Fair at Salem. Among other things Ed says: "Tlie weather is fine, having a good time, come down, lots of good races and plenty of water." WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH UPPER CRUST? ITS ALL RIGHT!
