LITTLE! stories bearing; upon the democratic manner and habits of King
George of England come to llgbt every now and then. The king surely
a overlooks no opportunity to perform acts of charity and kindness
which endear him to the hearts of his subjects. During a recent visit to
Yorkshire his majesty reviewed 8,000 children In Clifton park. The picture
shows him speaking to a cripple boy, Ambrose John Itoe, whoBe legs were am
putated at the knees two years ago and who was then presented by their
majesties with artificial limbs. The mayor of Yorkshire is with the king.

Now And Then.
WASHINGTON, August 8. On
the ground floor of the senate wing
of the capltol is a restaurant, with
two special rooms reserved for the
solons and a big dining room open
to the (iiijillc. There vire (times
when charges for Borne items on the
bill of fare rise to the altitude of the
high-priced restaurants In New York
Delmonfco and Sherry, Tor inst
ance. There were smiles on the faces of
"regulars" among visitors when they
spied an Item on the bill of fare set
ting forth "sweet corn, 25 cents". It
brought to their minds visions of
dazzling and steaming cobs reposing
on a plate. They ordered corn and
beheld with considerable surprise the
serving of one lonely cob of very or
dinary dimensions for the quarter
mentioned in the bill of fare. Next
of the tempting novelties Introduced
on the bill was " new potatoes, 20
cents".
"Well, well," murmured one of
the regulars, "a bowiful of new po
tatoes would certainly be excellent
for lunch."
So he gave the order and the col
ored emissary returned In due time
and set before hlra a small bowl
containing two potatoes, of what
seemed to him, rather limited cubic
al contents.
"Two potatoes at 10 cents apiece,"
he observed. "At that rate they
must be deemed by the management
a luxury flt only for the palates of
the rich."
The restaurant is owned by the
senate and Is operated by a man
ager. It loses money because the
bulk of the patronage Is limited to a
couple of hours at lunch time. The
deficit Is made good by withdrawals
from the Benate fund to meet contin
gent expenses.
