THE COWT.XTIOX BIXMCTINS.
For the past four days The News has been fur
nishing the public with bulk-lliu of the prog re h of the
convention ut Chicago. Jlundredb of people have view
ed those bulletins hourly. There In nrurcel a moment
of the day when 'there are nut lens than ten or twelve
portions reading eagerly or mournfully the newt from
the great convention. Theue bulletin are ruruiKhed to
The News by the I'uited Press AuHoclatlon which has a
dozen or more of efficient and able political reporters
Bitting at the reporters' table In the convention hall.
They are ub authentic as the telegraph can make Miem.
They ure accurate and up to date. The Kvenlng News
puts on the window each bulletin as It Is received, and
they are published In the paper In the evening. The
News has beard many expressions favorable to Its en
terprise In furnishing readers and non-readers or Its
paper with live, fresh and up-to-tbe-mlnute convention
news. It has meant more work to The News force to
do this, but we feel that the public Is entitled to the In
formation ub It 1b received and therefore we have given
It to them. Until the convention has nominated some
man and adjourns those who care to will get the
convention news aa we get it by coming to The News
office and reading the bulletins as they appear. The
News will also bulletin tbo democratic convention which
meets next Tuesday in Baltimore.
THE DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION.
Trouble Is brewing in the democratic camp, Bryan
opposes the action of the democratic national commit
tee In selecting Alton D. Parker as temporary chairman
of the convention which meets next Tuesday. Parker
was eight years ago the democratic candidate for the
presidency and macjo his run against Theodore Roose
velt, the republican nominee. Parker Is supposed to
be a re-actlonary and for this reason Bryan opposes
him. Bryan has telegraphed many of the progressive
democratic leaders and has asked their aid and support
in the tight that he will mke in the convention against
Parker. Whether he will win remains for the com
ing week to disclose. One thing Is certain, the expected
harmony In the democratic convention has had a rude
shock and in all probability there will be a lively scram
ble In that body before any nominations are made. An
other thing that will confuse matters Is the rule that
the democrats adopted many years ago and to which
they still cling the rule that It takes a full two-thirds
of the delegates to make a nomination. There are 1,094
delegates In the democratic convention. It will therefore
take 770 votes to nominate. None of the candidates
have sufficient delegates to receive the nomination on
l ho first ballot.
