day. Mrs. J. P. 131 shop was called to
Astoria the first of the week on ac
count of tho serious Illness of her
son, Frank Bishop. Later reports
are that Frank had been successfully
operated upon for nppendicitis but
nothing further has been learned.
The recent heavy nllns have con
verted the roads into muddy mud,
while quite a lot of hay will doubt
less be damaged by the steady down
pour which has continued since ten
o'clock Wednesday even! us. We
haven't been here as Ions as some j
others, but It strikes us as being a j
little the wetest June during our t
time.
J. A. Daughnrty, of the Cold
Springs Water Company, has recent
ly completed a fine fresh water well
at the west end of Second street and j
has Installed gasoline machinery pre- i
panitory to furnishing the city with I
water to sprinkle the streets during
the summer months. This is a valu
able asset to the waterworks and
something the city has been in need
of for a long time.
Veteran James Petrle. of (he Sol
diers' Home In Roseburs, is here for
a few days' visit with relatives.
Mrs. N. 10. Norris and children are
visiting at Isadora a few day a this
week.
O. W. Klnnt-y, wife and grand
children, Georgia and Viola Kinney,

absence of a few weeks at Portland

At the regular school meeting last
Tuesday a five-mill tax was levied,
T. J. ..Melnzer and P. Peterson were
rc-eltvied clerk and director res
pectively. A. T. Amoroso passed'away at the
home of his daughter, Mrs. J. W.

I'Otu, at 1:30 o'clock p. m. Death
was due to Infirmities attendant to
old age. Mr. Ambrose has appeared
in bis usual health of late, and while
be had reached the ripe old age of
90 years no one thought he would
be taken so suddenly, although none
were surprised to learn of his de
mise. Mr. Ambrose was probably
tt'v? oldest pioneer In this section and
had resided In and about Yoncalla
almost his entire life time, at one
time being quite extensively engag
ed in farming and stock-raising. Of
lato years deceased has resided In
Yoncalla, having united with the
Christian church some few years
since. "Grandpa" was of a Jovial
nature, considering bis advanced
age, and was supremely happy
when joshing with his fellow towns
men. The deceased Is survived by
three sons and two daughters: Jas.
Ambrose, Sr., of Yoncalla; Nathan
Ambrose, of Woodlown; R. Ambrose,
of Yoncalla; Mrs. J. W. Wise, and
Mrs. U. W. Long, of Yoncalla. The
sympathy of the community Is ex
tended to the bereaved families and
relative.:.
After a very successful term,
school closed last Friday and a gen
eral good feeling prevailed. Pupils
showed very pleasing advancement
while our Instructors tire entitled to
high cemmendation for this fidelity
to duty and the Interest taken In the
pupils. Commencement exercbses
were participated in Friday evening
amid very glowing circumstances.
An excellent musical program was
rendered, each number being en
thusiastically received. Rev. J. K
Howard, of Gleudale, delivered the
main address of the evening and
held the audience in close attention
throughout the discourse and at the
close hearty applause spoke more
plalntly than words the appreciation
of the crowd. O. C. Brown deliver
ed a few well chosen remarks after
which the diplomas were delivered to
the graduating class, consisting of
Leston Love, Sava Huntington, Wil
bur Wamsley, Frank Tinker, Harold
Peterson and Hansen. F. L.
Bea'rd addressed the class, commend
ing both pupils and instructor for
their excellent work and concluded
by delivering a gold medal to Leston
Love, leader of the class.
