The preliminary hearing of Joseph
Pawula, a strike-breaker, which was
set for this morning, was continued
until tomorrow upon the request of
District Attorney George M. Brown.
Powula Is charged with carrying con
cealed weapoiiB in direct violation of
the state law.
It vbb announced this morning
that Prank L Calkins, for the past
four years county assessor, will he a
candidate for re-election at the next
general election. Mr. CalkinB has
served the people of Douglas county
efficiently, and has a host of close
friends who will no doubt lend him
whatever assistance possible.
'Coroner N. T. Jewett returned
here last night from Oakland where
he was called to view the remains
of Henry Barggren, who died on a
Southern Pacific train while enroute
from Arizona to his home in Hepp
ner. Ore Berggren was afflicted
with consumption and had been
spending several weeks In Arizona
In hope of benefitting his health.
The remains were shipped to Hepp
ner for burial.
A. B. Maclallen, for the past few
months Interested In the Belolws'
Btore, yesterday disposed of his in
terests to Mrs Bertha Brown, wife of
District Attorney George M. Brown.
Roy Bollows, who war associated
with Mr. Maclallen will have full
management of the store In the fu
ture. Mr. and Mrs. Maclallen left
last night for Seattle where they will
spend ia couple of weeks. From
there they go to points in Arizona
where they will visit with the latter's
parents. ,
Sheriff George Qulne yesterday
opened the trunk left at the Rose
burg hotel by Carl G. Carlson on
the night he departed from town af
ter cashing a worthless check in the
sum of $50 at the I. Abraham store,
and after careful Investigation, dis
covered a magazines In which was
written a number of names. The
sheriff Is holding the names in se
crecy, believing that at least one of
them will be used bv the fugitive-ln
future operations. Circulars contain
ing a complete and detailed descrlp
' tlon of the crook have been sent to
every officer on the coast, and his
capture is expected at any time.
Walter Christie, a local Southern
Pacific striker, was arrested by Of
ficers Singleton and Fenton this
morning on a charge of assault and
battery. Upon being arraigned in
Justice of the Peace Marsters' court
following his arrest he entered a plea
of not guilty and the preliminary
hearing was set for tomorrow morn
ing.' Christie is accused of assault
ing Joseph Pouwla, who was arrested
on Sunday evening following an al
tercation in front of the Rapp room
ing house. Not knowing the name
ol( his assailant, Powula informed
Justice Marsters that he could lden
' tify him in the event he was still in
the city. Late yesterday Pouwla met
Christie, and Immediately Informed
the officers that he was the man
wanted. The Issuance of a warrant
followed. Pouwla claims that he was
emerging from the Rapp rooming
house on Sunday night, when Chris
tie approached and knocked him
from the sidewalk. It was then
he claims he ran to the opposite
side of the street and fired his revolv
er. He Bays he meant no harm, but
simply discharged the revolver with
a view of attracting the officers attention.
