population. Urged to action by the
high cost of tho nctfHBarU'B of life,
and encouraged by tho efforU of the
citizens of Homo other towns who
wore attracting attention in tlieir
effort to reduce household expenses,
there arotto a clamor umoiig the peo

Immediately turned a listening
and at once got busy. It was lltially
decided to open up for business on
a Tuesday morning at six o ciock,
and every day thereafter, except Sun
day, closing at 12 o'clock, noon.
On tho morning In question men
nndl women with baskets on their
arms begun to assemble early--and
the "market man" was on hand to
bosa tho Job; but not a military wag
on was on hand at six o'clock. Sevn
o'clock, then eight o'clock, came, and
Bill! no "producers" In sight. Nlm
o'clock camo and tho crowd sent up
a shout as a wagon pulled In and
backed up to the curb Then another,
and another, and In a short time six
wagoiiB were in line, ami the people
were swarming up over (lie sides and
nsklng what they had, and what they
wanted ror It. Most of (hem had ap
ples and poultry, and In ,i Tew. min
utes they were swamped with busi
ness. It took but u short time to
cloun out their loads, and all expnws
ed themselves as well pleased, and
promised to "come again". The fol
lowing moriilug there were mure
wagons, and they got In earlier. The
number Increased every day, and on
a recent Saturday morning, less than
two weeks after the market was
opened, 0 0 wagons were backed up
to the curb, and tho most doubling
mind had to confess that, (he thing
looked very much like a great suc
cess. Farmers came with produce as far
ns 27 miles, though the majority do
not drive over six or eight mfh-s. A
great variety of salable stuff Is (lik
en, from npples and poultry to home
made Hnui'age and pumpkin pies.
There Is a great demand for fresh
meat. Ih it hr-iuflt(lng (he farmers?
They nre getting two cents per pound
more for live poultry than they can
got from dealers while retail prices
are lower than formerly, and them Ik
being built up a tiad directly with
the consumer (hat will do much for
them In tho future.
