"Why I lost my job," was the
heading of an article in one of the
papers, and I started to read It think'
tug to gain some knowledge of im
portance, but only read a few lines
until it became evident it was a men
icine advertisement. It set me to
thinking that such a question should
often be one to think over especially
for those that feel they are not giv
ing the best services or satisfaction
to their employers. This is au age
when so many are wage earners.
"Wage earners," did I say? yes, but
how many that are employed do not
eurn the wages paid them, but just
hum? mi to their iob lunar as uossible
land do as little real service as they
I possibly cau and hold their job. The
! employe that takes little or no in
i terest in his work, but simply works
like a machine and needs an over
i seer to closely watch and direct, as a
! rule will loose their job sooner or
i later. On the other hand the wage
' earner that Is so fuitliful that his
t work Is a delight and the onlooker
would think the business belonged to
him. will be the one his employer

His Job most likely will not be lost
but a lasting one. It is a noticeable
faot that Roseburg has a lurge pay
roll for the number of population.
Few, If any, of the business houses
but what employ hired help, and
some are run entirely by such help.
This being a fact, Is it not a very im
portant matter for nil this great num
ber to carefully guard their employ
er's best interests, thereby holding
their job? We read In the good
book, "None of us llveth to himself".
The question Cain asked of the Lord
when he said "Am 1 my brother's
keeper," should be answered In the
affirmative by us all in these latter
days. The employer should be so
considerate of the welfawl 'of all
those under his supervision that they
should be treated like partners,
brothers. Ijibor and capital belong
together, and whether tbe employer
s an individual or a corporation iney
should be on the most Intimate and
friendly terms. A small boy once saw
two young birds in the same nest
necking savagely at each otner, ami
asked his older brother what they
were doing, and ho was told they
were fighting, when he replied "It
cannot be, for they are brothers."
We are told (bat we should love
our enemies and It Is a good whole
some doctrine that always brings
good results when persisted In. I
have thought If we all would treat

be a good thing also. Employers and
their helpers should bo friendly
brothers, as their Interests are one.
Surely a cnrpoatlon should be friend
ly with all they have laliprtng tor
them, and if possible make them feel
an Interest ill nil they do. There are
a few men so busy that one often
thinks they have no time to notice
the needs of a laboring man. The
fact of the matter is the very busy
man is the one I have found the most
ready to help one needing sympathy
and help. 1 have heard of men who
were born tired and never got rest
ed. One such, being asked by an
employer If he was afraid of hard
work, said: "No. I can lay down and
sleep along side of hard work." He
was told his services were not want
