One of the principal causes of the

was the refusal of Miss Hattie Garri
son, the matron, to permit them to
wear their garter straps while they
were being whipped.
A piece of rubber hose w-as used

GRINNING SKELETON IX TREE.
John D. Rockefeller, the workmen
on the estate are searching for a
band of Italian blackmailers.
The boy was recovered several
miles away, in the custody of two
women agents of the Black Hand.
When they were overtaken, the wom
en refused to answer question, and
finally fled. They escaped. -
Detectives have been employed to
run down the band that has terror

Italians.
- Threatening letters have been re

money was demanded.'
Grewsom Sight Confronts
Cruiser.
Timber
EUGENE, Ore.. March 17. To be
confronted by a grinning skeleton
standing upright In the hollow of a
tree was the experience of a party
of timber cruisers working on the
Lower Siuslaw for the Lacey Lum
ber company.
The discovery was made Monday
when a cruised removed a slab of
wood which covered the aperture in
the tree and revealed the grewsome
sight. It is thought to be the skele
ton of a white man or possibly thit
ot an Indian.
