Notwithstanding the fact that Douglas county has grown with won "derful strides during the past year, both In regard to population and wealth, the county school census just compiled by County School Superin . tendent of Schools Thurman Chaney, showB a decrease of 238, when com pared with last year.' The census just taken shows a total enrollment of 6,553, while last year's census shows 5,791. When asked relative to the de crease Mr. Chaney said he was at a loss to understand it, Inasmuch as it was generally conceded that the county haB been invaded with many eastern families during the past 12 months, most of whom have children coming under the Jurisdiction of the school lawB. The onH' feasible rea son for the decrease may be attribu ted to errors of the enumerators vho frequently omit children from tneir rolfc. With a decrease of 238 children of school age in the county the schools will lose several hundred dollars in revenue Inasmuch as the school fund is allowed $7 for each pupil from the county, say nothing of the proportion ment allowed by the state. Last year the state's proportlonment was $1.80 per pupil. PRESIDENT TAFT MAKES APPOINTMENTS IS FIXED SI 50. The case of the State vs. W. A. Bogard, proprietor of a local soft drink emporium, was called in Jus tice Long'B court this afternoon, but owing to the fact that one of the jurymen could not be found, the case? was coutinued until 9 o'clock tomor row morning. Bogard is accused of having sold a bottle of beer, contrary to the. local option laws of Oregon. In speaking to a News representative regarding the case this afternoon Dis trict Attorney Brown stated that the -.videne would be about the same as In the HI Chung case, which was tried yesterday afternoon. In fact, the district attorney admitted that he had caused the particular beer to be analyzed and had found it to contain the usual amount of alcohol found In real beer. When asked as to who had analyzed the beer Mr. Brown said that It had, been tested at the laboratory of Mr. Engles. at Grants Pass, who make3 a spclalty of such work. He al?o intimated that sev eral samples of Rosebure beer had been analyzed by even higher author ity, but that he deemed it unneces sary to call other witnesses. Mr. En gles testified that the boor sold by Hi Chung contained over 4 per cent alcohol, and from stalemnets nlter ed by the district attorney, he will likely give similar testimony' In the Rognrd case.
