GRANTS PASS, Ore., Dec. 10.
Though officers have two mun under
suspicion for being Implicated in the
Parson's blackmailing, nothing has
occurred to warrant their arrest. Men
are on guard at Granite Hill ceme
tery, near the spot stipulated for the
deposit of the money, but the decoy
package left there by Mr. Parsons re
mains undisturbed. Tnuight 1e the
limit of the time granted Parsons for
the deposit of the money. He firmly
dec lures that he will not deposit the
money.
Parsons feels certain the plot to
blackmail him Is the work of men
who knew hfm at Omaha, whence
he came with his family to this city
six months ago. The letter laying
forth the plan demands that $1,000
he deposited under a certain tree at
i Granite Hill cemetery by Friday
night at the latest. If the motley i&
! not deposited, the 7-jvar-old son of
i Parsons will be mufmed, his eyes re
I moved and his arms cut off.
! The bov is kept at home and the
premises watched closely.

The savings banks may not pay a very
high rate- of interest, but they are
safe. and that's mole than can be
tald of most of the numerous ' splen
did opportunities" that are advertised
. in capital letters.
The carpenter we hire had a handy
little arrangement in which to keep
his bits when not In use. He had
piece of overall cloth about two feet
' long, folded" up at one side, with
pockets sewed all along about the
length of a bit and of different sizes
according to tho diameter or the bits
slipped Into them. Then by wiping
them dry and putting them into those
pockets and rolling the whole thing
np. he had them In good, compact
shape and as snug as a bug in a rug.
I thought it a pretty good idea.
To prevent pumps from freezing:
Drill a small hole, say one-sixteenth
of an Inch or less, In pump stock be
low well or cistern cover, far enough
down so that frost will not reach it.
With this method (which I first used
nearly forty years ago) the pump is
always primed; and. In warm weath
er, all tho water that Is pumped Is
fresh nnd cool. If desirable to pre
vent water from vent In pump stock
striking wall of well, place a tin col
lar around stock, just above the vent;
collar should be five or six Inches
wide, flaring out over vent, and hnng
just low enough-to cctch the water.
Tho boat time to break coin BlubB
Is when It Is not far from zero Weath
er. If a good heavy pole Is used, they
will then snap off next to the ground
and will give no mom trouble next
year, as Is sometimes the case when
they are poled late In the season and
the weather Is only moderately cold.
Have a good strong pole that, will
reach across at least ten rows. Put a
team on each end. It the pole Is small
at one end and large at the other end.
make the weight for both teams the
by hitching nbout a foot from the
large end, and nbout four feet from
the small end of the polo. If not cold
enough to break tho stubs all off.
first pole all tho stocks down one way
then turn and pole them back ngaln.
This will bring them all down.
