HF.I.K'S OF WAR OF 1H12
Piiintlnp From (iufi-rift-p Taken to
Aavy Department
r , . '
Two old paintings which wore rip
ped from the walls of the captain's
cabin of the British frigate Guorriere
before that ship went down after her
fight with Old Ironsides, have just
come into the possession of the Navy
Department. Acting Secretary Ueek
man Wlnthron has determined to send
them to Boston, to be placed on the
Constitution as trophies of her most
notd nsht, the first great victory
of the war of 1812.
These two painlngs wll take rank
among ihe most prized war relics of
the country. The wood frames have
blackened with age, and the can
vasses are -in some places cracked.
Despite this, they are in good state of
preservation. So far as can be learned
the subjects have never been known
.since they were taken from the
Guorriere. One represents what Is
probably an Egyptian &cene, and the
other is a carefully done picture of a
Corinthian temple, resembling the
Parthenon. -
The paintings were captured by
Qommodore Isaac H"H. when he mat
ched the old Constitution apalnst the
guns of the Gueriiore. The Guerrlero
was so severely damaged in the fight
that he deemed it impossible to get
her into port, and ordered her to be
blown up. Before destroying her, he
sent an otneer on board to secure
something from her as a relic, and
the officer with his sword cut from the
panels of the captain's cabin these
paintings. Since thnt time they have
remained In the possession of Com
modore Hull's family.
Their existence first became known
when Isaac Hull Piatt, a descendant
of the Commodore, living In Welling
ton, Pa., forwarded them to the Sec
retary of the Navy, with a note of
explanation. In his letter he said:
'Commodore Isaac Hull was the
brother of my maternal grandfather,
Levi Hull, of Derby, Conn. These
paintings were left in (he custody of
his brother's wife, Mary Hull, nee
Wheeler, with directions to keep them
until he tshould call upon her for
them. He never did calf upon her for
tnem, ana mey remainea in nor pub
&ession until his death in 1843. Com
modore Hull had no chldrcn, and I
am his next of kin, and the pictures
aftor the death of my gramdinother
came to me as a part of his personal
estate."
The pictures were exhibited public
ly once, during the Civil War. They
were nlaced on show at the fair held
in Brooklyn, N. Y., for tho benefit
of the sanitary commission, and at
that time they created something of
a sensation. Since that time they have
been lost to the public.
MUSICAL EVEXT
ComlnE musical event of December
1st at the Armory.
Following are some of the Press
notices of the great artists that are
to appear In Hoseburg for the first
time in a city of this size.
Maximilian IMrk
The Portland Oregonian: "The en
thusiasm of the evening seemed to
reach its height after Mr. Dick's ap
pearance. He produces a deliclously
round and sweet-singing tone from
his instrument. He Is an artist in
every sense of the word."
Miss Kriith Adams.
Allegemelne Zeitung, Munich. Ger
many: Miss Adams knows how to
place her instrument properly,' and
with such' grace that the severest
opponents to women 'cellists are dis
armed In their opposition. Besides,
she combines grace with a most high
ly estimable technic. She draws from
her instrument rich, flowery tones,
yet avoids that sad tremulousness
that most 'cellists like to give out as
feeling. Her execution throughout
is natural, and that of a virtuoso In
the befct sense.
Mine. Alibi Pearle-Meyer
Berlin Relchsanzeiger She has a
brilliant soprano voice possessing a
rare charm of quality. The exhilarat
ing sweetness of tho tones alone Is
sufficient to capUvate the ear from
the first note. The natural and sound
musical feeling of the artist made
her a particularly happy exponent of
the children's and folk songs.

THE STORM FEARFUL
Between Camas Valley . and Myrtle
Point
From Lewis McMllllnh who drove
his team to this city and arrived yes
terday it is learned that the storm
was of a very, violent order from
Camas Valley to the first town on th
Ouiiuille. He left Myrtle Point Tues
day noon. The rain Ml In torrents
all along the routo, the wind reach
ed the velocity of a gale and wnter
literally poured down the mountain
sides. Trees wore ui-rooted in every
director, and In making the trip he
met with trees prostrate aenss the
road, wnter that olten looked dan
gerous! and mud and washouts with
out end.
There hes beer, no telephone com
munication between Camas Valley
and Mvrtle Point since the commenc
ment of the Etorm. at.d he Judged that
the line Is down and out In a hundred
places between the points named.
When he came over the repairer had
got Into communication with Remote
and expected to say "hello" to Rose
burg all right that day.
No one could make the trip
through last Monday, the first to suc
ceed was on Tuesday, and It Is likely
the mail will have to be packed
through on horses for several days.
It was the worst storm that the
country has seon for mnny years, and
lime will be required to clear away
.he wreck of trees ar.d fill In. tho
washouts.
IIOItSK AXI) lll'MAX SK.VSK
A story Is told of a certain man i
living in a New England village who
lost a valuable horse one day, and,
falling to find him, he went down
to the public square and offered a
rewind of (5 to whoever could bring
him back. A half-witted follow who
heard of the offer volunteered to dls- i
cover the whereabouts of tho horse, i
and sure enough he returned In half :
an hour leading the horse by his j
orldle. The owner was surprised at i
the ease with which bis hnlf-wltted ,
friend had found him, and on passing I
the $5 to him, he said: "Tell mo. how
did vou find the horse?" To which he
replied: "Waal, 1 thought to myself
where would I go If I was a hoss, and
I went there, and he had."

No g'reater service has been rendered to
womankind than the giving by Dr. Fredrick K.
Stearns of his remarkable prescription for the
many weaknesses with which women are
afflicted.
This great remedy is being placed on the market by the New
York and London Drug Company and is labeled "Nyal'a Vegetable
Prescription," "a boon to womankind"
The local drug firm, Fullerton & Richardson, are agents for
. Roseburg. They report as follows:
. "Nyal" remedies are superior to all of the highly exploited
patent medicines, but the best of the Nyal's line is the "Vegetable
Prescription." "
"During the many years we have sold drugs in Roseburg we
have never heard as much favorable commendation of any other
medicine. Nyal's Vegetable Prescription has received the praise of
every woman who has used it.
Other Nyal'a medicines which are worthy of mention at this
particular season are:
Nyal's Baby Cough Remedy ' for colds. Re
lieves difficult breathing.
Nyal's Croup Ointment.
Nyal's Cod Liver Oil Compound without the
oil. It is better than "Vinol" or Emulsion of Cod
Liver Oil and is an ideal system builder and tonic.
