National Apple Show. This big red
apple Is of variety known in cata
logs as "Spokane lleauty." The
fruit originated on the farm of Step

Walla, Washington, In the Into six
ties or early wver.lles, and for more
than twenty-live years was known us
"Maw.on's Scu'dling."
A lew years alter Mr. Mavson's
denlft. Spokane parties conceived the
plan of a little boost for that section
by renaming this really wonderful
apple, and succeeded In getting the
Spokane County Horticultural Society
to christen the fruit "Spokane
Heauiy."
In doing this the lliuilnilturul So
ciety of, that county deprived the
memory of one of Washington's earl
iest pioneers and on haidlsls of a
rightful heritage and took honor to
itself which It bad no right to claim.
The .Mavson apple, as it should be
called. Is umiuestionably the largest
that f.rows, and strange to say Is of n
very Due grain and delicious flavor.
11 Is stripped with red, very much so
on one side, while the other Is often
of a yellow-green color. Put Its keep
