S. M. Clark, one of the brightest
minds that has ever engaged iu
journalism, died a few weeks fgo
at Keokuk, Iowa, where for almost
thirty years lie Lad lived and labored
in the editorial cbair of the Daily
Gate City and was beloved by all
who came vitbin his genial influence,
cither by personal acquaintance or
through the medium of bis daily
writings, "Sam" Clark was one of
the men of whom it can be said with
serious nieanir.2 that the world is
better by bis having lived in i'
Mr. Clark was not an adherent of
any church; io fact he was known to
have decided opposition to the forms
of Christian religion, and was gen
c rally known as an pgnostic, but bis
real heart feelings relative to the
eternal side of life are well illustrated
by an editorial which he wrote some
years ago and which has been re
produced by the Gate City. A
correspondent wrote to Mr. Clark,
asking him to use bis pen to "kill off
Christianity" and this is his editorial
reply :
"So the man and the hour have
come at last. But the Gate City
must be content to go its way with
humbler matters. It was not made
for so great a part in the world as
killing off Ohtistianity. And then
we have got some ridiculous super
stitions that we cling to. Of course
it is very cowardly and abject in us,
but we are not great and wise and
must go our small, foolish way. But
we do know that (when we see
a mother locking into the face of
her dead child in its white shroud,
with its waxen little hands folded,
we are glad there is a voice sounding
to the ear through all these nineteen
centuries: "Suffer little children to
coaio unto Me and forbid them not,
for of such is the kingdom of heaven." i

worth while somebody has said, iu a
strong masterly way : "I am the
resurrection and the life." And
when the father or mother dies who
has lived a life so good and pure
thnt it sweetens even the life of the
censorious into praise?, one likes to
think that worrying, poor, uneven
life is not at all; but that really they
have entered into a great rest, and
the shelter of a mighty friendship
which say?: "Faithful over a few
things, I mtike thee ruler over many;
enter Into the joy of the Lord."
And do you know that we. have a
foolish and unwise notion, someway,
that the Lord's player and the ser
mon on the mount have' Dot been
failures. And that the history of
the crucifixion has not been bad for

you would that they should do unto

If our opponents would only prac
tice as well as preach the doctrines

no fear for the sifety of our institu

For centuries history and romance
have dwelt upon the destruction of
Pompeii as one ot the world's most
stupendous tragedies. But that ca
lamity has been exceeded in the
Galveston catastrophe in the opinion
of the Spokesman-IJevicw. The
population of Pompeii at the time of
its destruction has been estimated all
the way from 12,000 to 50,000, . with
the weight of authority inclining
toward the smaller estimate. In all
probability the city was less than
half as larne as Galveston, and since
all reports agree that half the prop
erty values of the Texas city have
been obliterated, the material loss
there will equal to the material loss
of the ancient city, and may exceed
it, since the United States quarter
master there fears that the city has
been "destroyed beyond its ability
to recover." This will certainly be
the case if later investiagation shall
show that the deep-water channels
into the harbor bave been filled with
sand, as the government would hard
venture another appropriation of
$6,000.0000.
In point of loss of life the Galves
ton disaster surpasses the Pompeiian

years of McKinley s administration
than in tbo whole previous period of
the nation's history.
A TJryanite exchange apologizes
for Bryan's garbling of the quotation
from Lincoln's inaugural address, in
Bryan's speech on Labor day, by
saying that "the quotation was per
fectly correct but of course Bryan
did no.t give the whole message
Of course not. But the charec
proven against Bryan, without
shadow of peradventure, is not that
he did not quote the whole message,
but that he dishonestly refrained
from quoting enough of the context
to show what Lincoln meant. When
Lorenzo Dow took for bis text:
"lop not come dowD," in order to
make an attack on the way women
used to dress their hair in his day,
the quotation was "perfectly correct,'
but he garbled a text that says, "Let
him that is on the house top
not come down to take anything out
of bis house," which has no more
relation to "top knots" than Bryan's
garbled extract had to his demagogic
effort to create strife between capital
and labor.
