RATS DECLARE CIVIL WAR.
cat folic Sialic of
Peal.
Another rat story comes from the
Twenty-second street police atation,
report a Chicago exchange. Not long
aro the station was iiivaeil by a col
ony of rats of various sizes and descrip
tions and no prisoners were kept in the
cells for several clays because of the
viciousness of the rodents. A number
of the ofticers were bitten while asleep
in the dormitory and the pest was
the cause of a great deal of trouble.
Lieut. Alcock advertised for cats and
s few of the residents in the vicinity
gave the services of their house pets
to rid the place of the pest. One of
the rats was killed and its carcass was
found in the basement. The smaller
members of the colony were routed,
but a number of big gray fellews re
fused to take orders from the cats
and until one day last week did all
they could to make life miserable at
the station.
Sergt. Carey says that they are all
pone now. lie declares, that they di
vided themselves into two factions and
declared civil war. The squadroom
was their battleground and the ser
geant says that he witnessed several
engagements. After one battle he
picked up the bodies of three warriors
left dead on the field. The other nifrht
he saw five of them run out through
the front door and since that time, he
says, there has not been a rat in the
station.
Four to On.
An English oflirer in Malta stopped,
in riding, to ask a native the way. lie
was answered by a thruff of the shoul
ders, and a "No speak Knglish."
"You're a fool, then," said the officer.
But the man knew enough English to
ask:
"Do you understand Maltese?.''
"No."
'Do you know Arabic?'
'No."
"Do you know Italian?'' "
"No."
"Do you kuow Greek?"
'No."
"Then you four fools. I onlyonel"
Ja (Mi to the Rescue.
Japanese servaats are the prevailing;
fad in. society on the other side of the
Atlantic. The Jap is regarded as "the
Frenchman of the east," and is not only
clean, but he refrains from gossip,
possibly because his knowledge of the
language does not admit of much chat
ter at present. When waiting he is
allowed to wear his native dt-ess, which
always has the family crest embroid
ered on it, so that he not only adds pic
turesqueness but a distinct dignity to
the family in which he condescends to
serve. In time, no doubt, the idea will
spread east, and may, perhaps, offer a
solution to the ever-present and per
plexing servant problem. Malay Mail.
Tarantula Bite Trainmen.
Scorpions and tarantulas have made
their appearance in such numbers at
Iguala andi other points on the Mexico,
Cuernavaca & Pacific railroad ns to
interfere with the operation of that
line and the transaction of other busi
ness. So many of the trainmen have
been bitten by the poisonous insects
that the running of trains is delayed
At Iguala a bounty has been offered by
the municipal authorities for the kill
ing of the pests, and hundreds of men
and boys) are employed in slaughtering
them. Chicago Record.
