Literary Club Banquet.
Monday s Daily.
Toulght the Students' Literary Club
will give a banquet to its members and
their invited friends in Fraternity hall
The banquet is intended as a fitting
close to a series of meetings that have
lasted over the winter and have been
found exceedingly profitable to a class
of young men in the city who prefer to
spend their leisure hours in acquiring
useful knowledge rather than in idle
ness and folly. An extended post-prandial
program has been arranged and it
is more than probable that something
will be said or done looking to the con
tinuance of the work of the club in a
more extended and permanent form.
Following is the program :

speakers.
The Club 1'crpeluated.
The banquet given last night by the
Students' Literary Club appears to have
been enjoyed by all who took ?part in it.
Between fifty and sixty persons of both
tjexes were present. The program as
reported yesterday was followed in the
main, bat several speeches were added
that were not down on the bills. The
members of tbe club, through Timothy
BrownhilL, who is justly considered the
father of the club, sprung a little sur
prise upon tbe guests in tbe form of a
aggsstion that the club, instead of dis
banding or even temporarily discontinu
ing its meetings, should perpetuate the
institution in some form along the
lines of the Y. M-C. A. The main ob
ject of the movement ia to throw around
tbe young mea of the town who choose
to avail thei selves of it, a healthy,
wholesome, Christian influence. It is
intended to have a public reading room,
applied with tbe best magazines and
paper of the day, that shall be open at
all times to anybody and everybody. A
gymnasium is also part of the plan. At
the meeting last night the chairman,
Mr. John Gavin, appointed the follow
ing gentlemen as a gt serai committee to
subin't plans and suggestions to a com
mittee of the club: Kev. U. F. Hawk,
Rev. D. V. Poling, Hugh Gourlay, C. L.
Gilbert and Timothy Brownhill, chair
man. The suggestion of a club for the
literary and moral benefit of the young
men met with the hearty endorsement
of all the speakers, particularly the min
isters, who promised their earnest and
cordial aid and sympathy.

London, April 2, 2 p. m. Tbe war
office has received the following dis
patch from Roberts, dated Bloemfontein
Sunday :
"I received news late yeetcrdy even
ing from Colonel Broadwood at Thabao
chu, 38 miles east of here, that informa
tion had reached him that the enemy
was approaching in two iorces from the
north and east. He stated that it the
report proved true, he would, retire tow
ards the waterworks, 17 miles nearer
Bloemfontein, where we have had a
detachment of mounted infantry for the
protection of the works.
"Brad wood was told in reply that the
Ninth Division, with Martyr's Mounted
Infantry, would march at daylight to
support him and that if be considered it
necessary he should retire to tbe water
works. He moved there during the
night and bivouacked. At dawn today
he was shelled by the enemy, who at
tacked him on thiee sides. He immedi
ately despatched two horse artillery bat
teries and his baggage toward Bloem
fontein, covering some of them with bis
caval ry.
"Some two miles from tbe water
works, the road crosses a deep mullah
or spruit, in which during the night a
force of Boers had concealed themselves.
So well were they hidden that our lead
ing scouts passed over the drift without
discovering them, and it was not until
the wagons and guns were entering tbe
drift that the Boers showed themselves
and opened fire. Many of the drivers
of the artillery horses were immediately
shot down at short range, and several
guns captured. The remainder galloped
away, covered by Roberts' Horse, which
suffered heavily.
"Meanwhile Lieutenant Chester Mas
ters, of the Remington Scouts, found a
passage across the spruit unoccupied by
the enemy, by which the remainder of
Broad wood's force crossed. They re
formed with great steadiness, notwith
standing what had previously occurred.
Broad wood's report, which has just
reached me, contains no details, but
states that he had lost seven pane and
all bis baggage. lie estimates all his
casualties at about 350, Including 200
missing.
On hearing this morning that Broad-
wood was bard Dressed, I immediately
ordered General French, with the two
remaining cavalry brigades, to follow in
support of the Ninth Division. The
latter, after a magnificent march, ar
rived on the scene ot action shortly after
2 p. ui. Broadwood' force consisted of
the Royal Household Cavalry, the Tenth
Iluss rs, theQ. and U. Batteries of the
Royal Horse Artillery, and Pitcher"!
battalion of mounted. The strength of
the enemy ie estimated from 8000 to 18,
000, with gone, the number of which ie
not yet reported.
Lokdok, April 2 A rumor of the re
capture by the British of seven guns
taken from Colonel Broad wood's force,
based on a dispatch to the Chronicle
from Rloerufonteia, which ie in all prob
ability correct, fails to compensate Lon
don for the severe shock experienced by
a humiliating defeat stvstained w ithin a
few miles of the headquarters of the
British army of occupation.
The public is painfully surprised to
learn after all that British officers of
high position can still neglect precau
tions which the veriest tyro might be
expected to observe, and blunder into
traps which observance of elementary
military rules would have revealed.
There is no attempt here to minimize
the discreditahleness of the whole affair,
so far as the British are concerned, or
detiact from the dexterity of fhe Koers,
who were apparently commanded by
General Dewit. The tactics of the
burghers ware evidently excellently con
ceived, and boldly carried out, and un
less tbe reinforcements sent by Robert
have turned t'le tide, aod recaptured
the prlaonor, a couple of hundred men
from two crack corps of the Household
Cavalry and the Tenth Hussars, are
now on tneir way to swell the growing
deposit of British prisoners at Pretoria.
President Kruger is said to have prom
ised to reoccupy Bloemfontein this week,
and the stubb rn burgher seem lo be
closing around the place in such force as
promises to be troublesome, especially
when it is realized that the activity of
strong Boer force In the vicinity of
Paardeberg has already interrupted
direct communication between Robert
and Kimberley. But for the overwhelm
ing number at tlie disposal of Robert,
the situation would justly cause Great
Britain anxiety. As It is, tbe nation ia
beginning ta realize, from the nature of
the guerilla warfare, that it is liable to
amViarrasa the future movement of
British troop.
A special dispatch from Bloemfontein
this morning say that the water upplv
of the place has been cut off. This is a
natural aequence d tbe Boer luccess at
tbe water works. But the authorities are
hopeful that the strong reinforcement
sent by tbe commander-in-chief will
promptly remedy this. It t evident
from Robert' that a big engagement is
in progress. Although it ia difficult to
estimate the number of British engaged,
they probabiy exceed even the 8000 or
10,000 men which the Beer are estimated
to number. The scene of the British
disaster appear to be Mealie Spruit,
where the Bloemfontein road crosses a
tributary, of tbe Modder river.

The editor of the Vindicator has had
occasion to test the efficacy of Chamber

remarkable results in each case. First,
with rheumatism in the shoulder from
which he suffered excruciating pain for
ten days, which was relieved with two
applications of Pain Balm, rubbing the
parts afflicted and realizing instant
benefit and entire relief in a very short
time. Second, in rheumatism in thigh
joint, almost prostrating him with severe
pain, which was relieved by two appli
