GRAND JURY REPORT.
Doings of the Jury and Becommenda
UODItyThcm,-
We, the grand jary duly impaneled
for the November, 169S, term of the cir
en it conrt: bez to herewith submit our
final report as follows: -- "' - - ' r ;-
" We have been 'in . session nine days
and have inquired into all crimes com
milted or triable in "Wasco county ,"so
far as they have come to onr knowledge
and as a result of our inquiries have re'
turned into court eleven true . bills and
two not true bills, as well" as having
made inquiry into several cases that the
evidence did not warrant reporting.
'. We have visited the county poor farm
and the offices of the sheriff, county
clerk and treasurer. " In our examina
tions we were extended every courteey,
and our examinations was rendered eas y
by the respective officials. ..
- We found the poor farm well conduct
ed and managed, the comfort of the in
mates being looked alter well. we
would recommend that a warmer quali
ty of underclothing be furnished the in
mates than if now provided for their
use, which is insufficient to afford ade
qoate protection. - Their, quarters are
comfortably arranged,but were not well
warmed at the time of our visit. " Some
of the old men find it a hardship to be
deprived of tobacco, and, to the end tAat
it will make the last ..days of these poor
unfortunates, a little easier, we would
recommend that a supply of tobacco be
provided for them. -. - .
We found the county j nil 'well kept
and the comfort of the inmates subserved
as well aB the conveniences ; will permit
We will recommend that tbe hammocks
and barks now in be arranged and fixed
so that they will furnish more . comfort
able sleeping facilities for the inmates
We would- recommend that larger
more convenient, and more eunaoie
water cloeets be provided at the , rcourt
house, we having found the presenter
rangements to be entirely inadequate.
We would recommend that a ladies'
toilet be added. .
We found tbe county -clerk's office
well kept, the - books and records in as
good condition' as the conveniences of
tbe office will permit. The vault which
contains the files and records' is not well
arranged for the preservation of the
records. . We would recommend that
steel vault furniture -be placed in the
vault as soon as practicable, and that a
door or ehutter be provided for tbe vault
window that will be a sufficient protec
tion to tbe contents of tbe vault. ' vThe
present shutter is entirely inadequate to
furnish the required protection.
We commend' the . straightforward
and bnEinesslike manner in which Hon.
A. A. Jayne has conducted bis business,
and the pains he has taken to enable
this grand jury to expedite the disposal
of its business. " - '
Having disposed of all. the business
before us and having no further business
to transact, we respectfully aek to be dis
charged.' Ciias. Fbalbt, Foreman."-
