Results of Yesterday's Battle Near Santiago
as Reported by General Shatter to
the Adjutant-General.
WASHINGTON, June 25. A .dispatch from General
Shatter, concerning the engagement of yesterday between the
Spanish and American forces near Santiago, reached the war
department today, and was as follows:

ADJUTANT-GENERAL,
Further news from General Wheeler places our loss in
this morning's firing at about ten killed and forty wounded
Captain Capron, First volunter' cavalry , was killed.
Wounded: Major Brodie,' Captain McClintock and
Lieutenant Thomas, First, volunteer cavalry; ( Major Bell,
Captain Knox and Lieutenant Bryan, First United States
cavalry; Captain Knox seriously. (
Captain Wainwright, formerly reported wounded, is un
insured. The names of the others killed and wounded are
not yet known. f
The Spaniards occupied a very strong entrenched position
on a high hill. The firing lasted about an hour and the
enemy were driven from their position, which is now occu
pied by our troops, about a mile and a half trom Seyilla
The enemy retired toward Santiago. . SHAFTER.

Spain Must Concede When She
Tires of Fighting.
Madrid, June 25. It is reported here
that the peace conditions suggested by
the United States include the possession
of Porto Rico, the independence of Cuba
with an American protectorate, a naval
station in the Philippines and a coal de
pot in the Canaries.
Regarded at a Feeler.
Washington, June 2r. -The ' an
nouncement from Madrid that the
United States has suggested peace con
ditions with Spain was received with
great interest for the reason that the re
port was regarded as a feeler. There is
no basis of fact for the report. From
the state department it met a prompt
denial. No overtures have come to the
department from any responsible diplo
mat as yet, looking to the consummation
of peace.
Murderous Bandits Captured.
St. Louis, June 25 A special to the
Poet-Dispatch from Whitehall, 111.,
eays:
Frank Aamsworth and Bill 'Jackson
are the men who held np the fast ex
press on the Bnrlington road last night,
and killed Engineer Dempsey. A sher
iff's posse was immediately organized,
and bloodhounds soon tracked Jackson
to the Rood House, where be was ar
rested. Jackson told the whole story of
the hold-up, and Ainsworth was ar
rested a few hours later.
Fell One Hundred Feet
Bctte, Mont., June 25. Five men
were probably fatally injnred here this
afternoon by falling from a scaffold,
distance of one hundred feet. The men
were at work on the big ' Hennessey
. building, in course of construction on
Main street. They were picked np un
conscious and it is believed all will
die. '

VICKSBURG TAKES
A SPANISH PRIZE
Two-Masted Vessel Amapata of Hondu
ras Captured While Trying to Run
Out of Havana Harbor.
Kky West, June 25. A two-masted
vessel, the Amapata, of Honduras, was
brought in here this morning in charge
of Ensign Zeoo, of the Vicksburg. She
was captured yesterday afternoon while
leaving Havana and attempted to run
the blockade. She was quickly over
hauled, and the Vicksburg found over
thirty women and children and a num
ber of men on board. The crew and
passengers are all refugees.
Hot Wave in Wisconsin.
Milwaukee, June 25. One death, a
fireman of the Goodrich steamer She
boygan, name unknown, being the vic
tim, and one prostration is the result of
the heat in this city in the last 24 hours.
Reports from throughout the state indi
cate that the hot weather was general.
The mercury ranged from 90 to 99. At
Glenwood, Wis., J. F. Shirk, editor of
the Glenwood Times, died from sun
stroke. - ' '
Oil Struck on Cfailkoot Pass.
Victoria, B,. C., June 25. The
steamer Athenian, which arrived from
Skagway this morning, brings news of
the discovery of a valuable stream of oil
in the Chilkoot region, near the scene of
the avalanche of last April.

Sioux City, la., June 22. Many new
victims of the storm which blew down
the circus tent were discovered today.
The dead number three' and the injured
thirty-three. Of the latter ten are crit
ically hurt, and some may die. '
The lane Gray Reported 'Ashore. '
Victoria, B. , C, June 25. The
schooner Jane G.ray is reported ashore
near Kynquat, about 100 miles from the
place where she was wrecked. ' The re
port is discredited here. , ' ' '.'

On the Rio Guma, Sunday, June 26,
Noon. Four batteries of American ar
tillery and a gatliDg gun have been
placed on a hill overlooking the basin in
which. Santiago lies. The American
troops were within 20Q yards of the
Spanish entrenchments last night.
It is believed that more artillery will
be necessaryj before an assault can be
made upon the Spanish works. All the
hills about Santiago are covered with
blockhouses. 'There are 34 lines of in
trenebments and behind them are four
lines of rifle pits, while the fronts are
secured by rows of barbed wire.
Pushing on Towards Santiago.
Off Daiquiri, Sunday, via Kingston,
June 27. The Third and Ninth cavalry
men remain here guarding the material
ashore. All the other regiments are be
ing pusnea as rapiaiy as posEtoie
towards Santiago. Active operations
before that place are officially expected
to begin Wednesday. .
The interrnption of communication
between the army and tbe fleet by Btorni
is possible at any time.
Insurgents Concentrating Near Juragua
Jcbagua, June 26, via Kingston, June
27. General Garcia, with 3000 Cuban
insurgents from the mountains west of
Santiago, were brought here today on
American transports. Fully 5000 insur
gents are now concentrated near Jura
gua. The majority are well armed, but
all are badly clothed. They are accus
tomed to the bushwhacking methods of
the Spaniards, and are familiar with
every trail in the vicinity of Santiago.
A conference between Shatter and Gar
cia will be held tomorrow to further
consider plans of co-operation of tbe two
armies.
Garcia's plan is to march his entire
army overland along the northern coast,
keeping in touch with the American
army. As soon as possible uarcia win
effect a junction with Gomez'. forces;
now west of Havana. The Cnban lead
era plan is to have 20,000 insurgents be
fore Havana when the time comes for in
vestment of that city.'

Crisis Has Occurred. .
Madrid, June 25, 3 p. m. After a vis
it, which the premier made to the queen
regent this afternoon, it was reported
that tbe expected ministerial crisis had
occurred. '
Coal for Dewey '8 Fleet' .
Philadelphia, June 25. The British
ships Glooscap and East Lothian sailed
from- this port today for Manila with
nearly 6000 tons of coal tor Dewey's
fleet.

. Camara's Secures No Coal.
Port Said, June 27. A dispatch to
the Tribune tro.n Port Said eays :
Admiral Camara has made extensive
arrangements for coaling his ships in
the Red eea and Indian ocean. Trust
worthy information leads to the belief
that the true objective point of Camara's
fleet is not Manila, but Hawaii and
finally San Francisco. .
Admiral Camara has asked to be al
lowed to purchase 10,000 tons of coal for
tbe Spanish fleet at Port Said, but the
Egyptian government refuses to permit
the Bbips- to coal in Egyptian waters.
Pending deliberations which are likely
to last a long time,' the fleet intends to
remain at Port Said.

Steamer Newfoundland Will Again Try
to Carry Supplies'to Cuba. .
Halifax, N. S., June 27. The steam
er Newfoundland, which attempted to
sell her cargo of foodstuff at Guantana
mo and was ordered away from that port
by American warships, has arrived here
in ballast, having disposed of her carpo
at Mayaguez and San Juan de Porto
Rico, and it is alleged will reload to run
the blockade. The shippers of tbe cargo
are said to' have cleared a handsome
'sum on the venture, and there are said
to be several other vessels fitting out for
tbe same business.

Supplies for the Explorer.
St. John's, June 27. Lieutenant
Peary's steamer, the Hope, Captain
Bartlett, has sailed for Sidney, C. B
where she will take on a scientific party,
proceeding thence to North Baffin's bay,
where she will join Lieutenant Peary,
to transfer stores and coal to the steamer
Windward. The Hope's reserve stock
ot 1000 tons ot coal will be landed at Lit
tleton island, off tbe coast of Greenland,
to be used by the Windward on her re
turn, provided she is frozen in at the
Lorth pole. , The Hope expects to return
here in September. '
