Mrs. D. L. Cates and children of Cas

have been visiting with Mrs. Cates
parents. Mr. and Mrs. DeHuff.
John H. Cradlebaugh returned on the
early morning train from bis mine at
Greenhorn, Baker county, or, as be
terms it, "Klondike on the American
aide."
Yesterday A. . Lake and wife of
Wamic returned from Portland, where
tbey have been spending a few weeks
They will leave today for their home at

Mrs. W. Robberson, wife of the Golden
dale merchant, returned to her home
this morning.
Peter Stadelman, of the Commission
find Grocery Co., went to'Portland on
business today.
Miss Edna Moody, who has spent the
past week with relatives in this city,
left for Portland this morning.
Mrs. W. A. Johnston left on the Regu
tor for Portland today. ' She will
visit friends in that city for a few days.
Gilbert W. Phelps arrived in the city
from Heppner yesterday, and he will re
main here some time attending court. -
Contractor Hugh Glenn retnrned on
the morning train to Rainier. He has
-been spending (Sunday with her family
in this city.
Mrs. J. H. Huntington of Baker City,
who has been visiting the family of her
brother-in-law, B. S. Huntington of this
city, left on tho boat for Portland today.
M. L. Jones, one of the leading farm
' era of Marion county, ia in the city to
day, and favored this office with a pleas
ant call today. Mr. Jones has been in
the stock business in this county with
D. J. Cooper, and at present resides at
Brooks, in Marion county.

Mr. D. M. French went to Pendleton
last night to attend the cattlemen's con
vention. Fred H. Shoemaker, who has been

Judge Mays went to Pendleton last
night, wherehe will attend the cattle
men's convention.
Dr. Clarke of Portland, secretary of
the state board of' dentistry, ia in the
city visiting friends.
Attorney Chester V. Dolph of Portland
returned home on the morning local.'
He has been in the city attending to
court matters.
Mr. and Mrs. Wolfard of Hood River,
who have been visiting Mr. and Mrs.
Gilbert in this city, left on the boat this
morning for their home. Mr. Wolfard
ia a leading merchant of that town.

land last night.
Spain has appointed a new minister
to Washington.
Reports received from Dyea and Skag
uay state that soldiers are badly needed
ait those places. Toughs have charge of
the towns. '
A big fire occurred at San Francisco
yesterday. The Phelan block was badly
damaged and several hundred thousand
dollars worth of property destroyed.
Semiofficial advices received by the
French foreign office from Peking say
Japan has notified China that she in
tends keeping Wei-Hal-Wei perma
nently.. .
Senor Sagaeta, the premier, and other
members of the Spanish cabinet, state
pnblicly that the De Lome incident will
not ffect the1' relation- between Spain
and the United States, and that a new

It was rnmored Sunday that Consul
General Lee has resigned, but no defi
nite information was obtainable.
Jacbb Combs fell three hundred feet
down a shaft at the Maryland mine
yesterday and was inetantly killed.
A secret disuatch was received from
Minister Woodford yesterday. The sup
position ia that it was a report of the ac
tion of the Spanish government in the
De Lome matter.
The Democrats and Populists in Port
land are greatly aroused over the ap
pointment of judges and clerks by the
county court. They pronounffs it biased
and outrageous.

The Hawaiian annexation treaty will
receive the greater share of the senate's
attention during the week.
Latest advices state that Zola's
chances for acquittal are slim, but it ia
expected that bis punishment will be
light.
England is negotiating with China to
open Yang Chun Fa, in the province of
Han Nan, as a treaty port, and is ne
gotiating also on the subject of the navi
gation of inland waters. '
The house will on Wednesday enter
upon the consideration of the bankrupt
cy bill, which the majority of the judi
ciary committee reported as a substitute
for the Nelson bill, p iseed by the senate
at an extra session last summer.
The 13th annual meeting of the Na
tional Woman's Suffrage Association be'
gan at Washington yesterday afternoon.
The meeting also signalized the 50th an
niversary of the first convention of
women devoted to woman's rights in
this country.
The Hong Kong Telegraph says that
continual trouble ia.being reported from
vessels manned by Japanese crews, the
Japanese resenting any instructiona or
surveillance from European officers, and
showing an especial aversion for Euro
pean passengers.
A big colonization project is being
considered at present by the Japanese.
It being to send a colony ot the Mika

is said to have been obtained' from the
Mexican government.
