Mrs. Truman Butler left yesterday for

she will visit relatives for some time.
Bill Gil more of Rockland returned
from Baker City yesterday. He reports
times lively in that town at present.
Alex. Mackintosh, one' of Prineville's
sheep kings, who has been In the city
for several days, left for his home
Wednesday.
Miss Agnes Lane, who has been visit
ing relatives in the city for some time,
left on the overland last night for her
home in Meacham.
Miss Mary Cox of Kingsley was a pas
senger on the Regulator this morning.
She goes to Oregon City to spend a few
weeks visiting friends.

Miss Bottorff has been confined to her
room for several days with neuralgia
Today she is so far recovered aB to be

Hon. A. S. Bennett returned this
morning from Moro. where he has been
attending court. Mr. Bennett said the
term of court for Sherman county was
exceptionally short this fall, there being
no cases of very great importance.

J. H. Zane, editor of The Reporter, is

J. P. Mclnerny returned from Port
land on the boat last evening.
Rev. DeForest left on the Spokane
local this morning lor Portland.
Mr. Bellinger and wife left for Port
land on the Dalles City this morning.
Mr. O'Brien, one of Klickitat s most
successful sheep raisers, is in the city on
business today.
Miss Richardson of Berkeley, Calif or
nia, is visiting her aunt, Mrs. Mary
trench, in this city.
Rev. Curtis, ot the Congregational
church, was among those who went
down to the fruit fair this morning.
Mr. Harry Liebe, Mrs. Geo. Liebe and
Miss Bertha Burkhart went down on
the 8:30 train this morning to attend
the fair at Hood River.
John O'Leary, one of Sherman
county's leading sheep men, came in
yesterday. He says sheep all through
that connty are in excellent shape.

Death of William Masters.
'William Masters, a. pioneer of 1832,
died at his home in Portland Tuesday
evening from a complication of diseases
incident to his advanced age. He was

for a year, and his death was not a sur
prise. He was one of the best known
men in Portland, having lived there
since 1852. He was an early connty
treasurer, and at the time of bis death
was the oldest member of Taylor street
church. A wile and three sons survive
him. The latter are W. Y. Masters, of
the Pacific Coast Abstract Company, S.

A few weeks ago the editor was taken

St. Mary's academy for ladies, located
in this city and under the direction of
the Sisters, Is one of the best educational
institutions on the coast. Tbe building
is of brick, large and well ventilated.
Besides the regular studies, especial ef
fort is made to instil into the minds of
the pupils a desire to form their hearts
to virtue, and to fit them to be true and
noble women. Gratuitous lessons are
given in all kinds of plain and fancy
needle word, knitting, embroidery, etc.
Pupils will receive the same watchful
care that would be given them by con
scientious parents. It is in fact an ideal
sbcool and a pleasant home. Those who
have girls to send to school should "write
