The breathing of this reptile is essen
tially aquatic, so far as the outside lungs
are concerned, though it has internal
lungs, and rises to the top of the water
when these are filled with air. ; It can
live but a short time out of the water.
Whenever the water in which it lives
gets low it buries itself in the mod, and
lives on aquatic worms and insects and
soft-shelled mollusks. ; ;,?;.
. It is found only; in the subterranean
waters of certain caves of Europe, not
ably those of Carinthia and Tyrol, and
especially in the Adelsburg cavern, in
Carniola. Only two others were ever
known to be found in this country. ' By
keeping the reptile in water, and mud,
Mr. Worcester may encceed in extend
ing its life indefinitely. :V. iv.jo: .-.

makes it a curious sight.
' It is about one foot long, with an elon
gated and cylindrical body. The tail is
short, broad and compressed laterally.
The strangest feature of the reptile ia its
- lungs, which are on the outside of its
body, and so transparent that the blood
can be seen coursing through them.
It has three sets pf lungs, or rather
three bronchial tubes, all of. which are
persistent during life. Its skin is slimy.

. f There are few places and few grades
of life, in, either the rural or the urban
.world, where the word "wedding" ia not
a synonym for joy and festivity. Onljr
the cynic or the misanthrope protests
against . the wedding celebration. We
wear out most customs, but the "wed
ding" feas.t remains.' While very likely
not the only place in the world, the only
place in my experience where there is
any general concealment of proposed
connubiaJity and nuptial intent is1 in
the mountains of the south. It may be
generally' known that "Zeb" is "keep
ing regular company" i with "Lize."
Suddenly the town will be apprised of
the fact that "Zeb and Lize done got
married last night." This constitutes
what' might be called an anticipated
surprise. 1 ' ' '
Sometimes in the large settlements
due notice will be given and the wed
ding take place in the little-church or
in the building used rn common for oil
public purposes religious, services,
school, political gatherings' and itiner
ant shows. That practice is, however,
generally confined to the elite of the
community.' ' In one place in my experi
ence the popular resort for the perform
ance of the ceremony was the broad
platform in the rear of a local sawmill.
I could discover noground forthe popu
larity of the spot. Sometimes a few inti
mate friends would be invited to atetnd.
Sometimes none was observer save the
causal passer-by. More frequently there
were no witnesses save the sun above
the lumber-piles around.
Concerning that spot a local magis
trate tells an amusing1 story. A certain
man nad been unfortunate in tne lon
gevity of his selections, had been twice
married and twice bereaved. He called
upon the magistrate to officiate at a
third ceremony. As the happy pair
took their places before him, upon the
mill platform, to pledge their faith and
love, he ,said to the groom: . "Move a
little further over this way, John. Toe
up to that line. That is where you've
always stood before." And there was
no proceeding until John had "toep up."
A man who was doing some work for
me came to me one day at noon and
asked permission : to be absent until
"quartering1 time," 3:30 o'clock.' He
said nothing' to me or to his associates
of his purpose. ; He returned promptly
on time, to announce,, in a casual and
indifferent manner, that during his ab
sence he had been married and, with
the little furniture possessed by the
pair, had settled m a cabin of his own.
Again and again have J seen the same
plan followed in other cases.. . :
The ground for so general observance
of secrecy I eoukLnot discover. It holds
with both the intention of marriage and
the precise time of the ceremony. I
think it is due in considerable measure
to fear of that harrowing performance
known as the charivari in the idiom.
"shivaree." To those unfamiliar with
that entertainment I can only describe
it as a most excruciating pan'domonium,
effected by combinations of pots and
pans, horns and howling. It takes the
form of an evening serenade to the
newly wedded pair. The officiating
musicians comprise all the young men
anid boys for miles around. I have been
the unfortunate auditor of one or two
such performances, and if I knew that
one were to take place around the walls
of my dwelling if I married I should
choose to "live a bachelor." I blame
no man for retaining' his secret to avoid
the experience. The poorer elasses,
with whom the concealment is a general
practice, have no money to spend for
the entertainment of their ... friends,
Xot infrequently, there is no money for
even a new gown for the brjae. ine
affair then becomes a sample matter of
mutual agreement; the business is dis
patched without' fuss or features and
the journey to paradise is taken by the
most direct route. N. Y. Post. .. .

Nenrlv everything- Xansen predicted
about his journey has come true. He
said he expected to cross the unknown
polr area, and he has done it. He
foretold exactly the general direction
in which his ship would draft while fast
in the ice,, but it is not certain that he
correctly assigned the cause pf this
drift. Hansen invented the
model of the Tram, making her hull
round and slippery like an eel, with no
corners or sharp edges for the ice to
seize upon.. She is the strongest vessel
ever used in Arctic exploration, asserts
McClure's Magazine. He said that press
ure would simply lift her on the ice, and
so her bottom, near the keelwas made
almost flat,Nin order that she might not
r.psize while on the ice surface, and
her screw and rudder were also ingeni
ously protected. The many experts who
said her design would not save the;
Fram from instant' desrtruction were
mistaken, for she met these resistless
ice pressures and they merely lifted her
out of her cradle and she rested safely
on the surface. Nansen said that, ow
ing to the probable predominance of
water in. the far north, he expected to
find there .higher temperatures than
along the north coast of Asia, This re
markable prediction has been fulfilled.
The lowest - temperature observed on
the Fram was 0iy2 degrees Fahrenheit,
hue further south, in the Kara sea, 03
egrees, and at the mouth of the Lena
river, 94 degrees, have been registered.
