Editor Chboniclb: Sometime last
fall a bridge across the Defoliates near
my place was cat down and sagged down,
so that the high water took it oat. Some
few people.withcut any reason fordo
inz so have imagined Mr. J. H. Kherar
had caused this wreck to be done. I am
sorry anyone could have so poor an
opinion of Mr. Sberar, whose reputation
is above reproach, but in order to cor'

that I am well satisfied as to who did the
work and that Mr. Sherar certainly bad

SUMMONS.
There are 500 silk manufactories in the
United States, capitalized at $50,000,000,
and giving employment to more than
60,000 persons, including 30,000 women
and girls. The first establishment of
the eilk business a permanence was ef
fected in the city of Paterson, X. J.,
which has Biuce come to be known as
the American Lyons, says the Philadel
phia Times. Paterson, however, has
not monopolized the eilk business of
Mew Jersey, for other cities of the Cran
berry state have had a part of it, par
ticularly Newark and Jersey City. New
Jersey has remained at the head of the
line of manufactures, with a product of
$20,000,000 in the year of the last fed
eral censuB, New York and Pennsyl
vania following with a product of $19,
000,000 each, and Connecticut commg
foartb, with a product of $10,000,000.
The statistics just at hand for the year
1895 show on the part of Pennsylvania
"a marked increase in this manufacture
since the national censas of 1890.
While the number of establishments has
not been increased, their output has
been enlarged 25 per cent., the most
notable increase being in the production
of ribbons, which was more than
doubled, the output in 1895 being 35,'
000,000 yards. The number of spindles
increased daring the year 59 per cent
In 1895 the number of employes was
13,815, an increase of 4485 over the
number in 1890. The wages paid in
1895 were $4,182,292, as compared with
2,725,285 in 1890. At this rate of in
crease it cannot be long before Penney!
Tania will exceed New Jersey in the
amount of the annual product of silk.
Eastern Pennsylvania, in which
majority of the silk manufactories are
situated, has many geographical ad
vantages. Unlike Western Pennsvl-
vania, except in the anthracite region
it does not produce coal, ou or iron ore.
Much of the land is rocky, some of it
sterile, and it is not held at high prices.
Wood any building materials are cheap,
there is water power in plenty. The
railroad connections of Eastern Pennsyl
vania are excellent, the anthracite coal
lines passing through much territory
which is not productive in agriculture or
otherwise. Recently the extreme north
eastern section of Pennsylvania has
been utilized for the construction of Bilk
factories. This can be done with ad
. vantage now, because the eligible towns
of New Jersey are somewhat overcrowded
on the falling silk market, and the cost
of eligible land increased abnormally in
cities adjacent to New York. Along
with this increase of land baa been the
corresponding increase in rents. The
largest market for American silks is in
the cities of the East, and one of the
first of these is the city of Philadelphia,
Aa Pennsylvania takes much of the pro
duct of American silk mannfactories,
there seems nothing unnatural in Penn
sylvania in supplying most of the de
mand; but it will be a surprise to many
persons to know that the Keystone state
is now nearly at the head of the states
of the country, in the manufacture of
eilk.
' The value of raw eilk imported into
the Untied States from France, Italy
and China chiefly last year was $22,
000,000. The value of silk goods 'im
ported" was $31,000,000.

The Skating Carnival.
The masquerade carnival at the skat
ing rink last night was not a success
financially, the attendance being very
light. Those present had a very enjoy.
able time, more bo perhaps than they
would bad the crowd been larger. The
Dalles band was present and furnished
some delightful music. .Prizes were
awarded, the onlv one of which we
noted was that given to Charley Hepp
ner, who was dressed as a girl. At 10:30
the lights went out and everybody went
home well pleased with their evening s
pleasure.
