A SINGLE PURPOSE.
The Earnest and Indefatlguable Work
of. Mitchell and Flak. . ;
t- v A committee, composed of Messrs. N.
.': ' Whealdon, Emile Schanno and B. F.
Laughlin were delegated by The Dalles
- Commercial Club to visit Senator Mit-
cfiell and Capt. Fisk at Portland with a
- - view to ascertaining the complete status
of the locks improvement, both present
' ,! and prospective. The committee per
, 'v'v formed this mission "yesterday Vind re-,-turn
'. much"-. gratified, as much- by the
.' courteous treatmenftbey received as to
ascertain that both the senator and the
engineer are as much in earnest over the
speedy and triumphant conclusion of
.-. this great water way to ' the needs of
: commerce as any citizen in the land.
r x. -The committee first called upon Sena
tor Mitchell, when all went to Mr.
Fisk's office.- Thenr they learned the
J'ijgooi news that November 15th (on or
before) has been set as the final date for
the completion of the locks, involving
the finishing pouches to the new con
tract, found necessary to complete the
middle lock by the- ravages of the high
water of 1894. . They found that to con
summate this very event Senator Mit
chell bad stayed .in Washington six
weeks longer than he designed,' so as to
follow up the circumlocution of the con
tract being transferred from the halls of
congress to the war department, thence
to the government engineers at Washington.".-
Mr. Mitchell so brought to
bear all of biB vast energy and influence,
that aided by the! recommendation of
Mr. Fisk, the engineer department had
let the' final contract without going
through the ordinary channels of adver
tising, which would have delayed the
completion of the. work another year.
The Days have accepted this last-named
contract and have obliged themselves to
complete the wqrk by. November 15th.
Nothing can be imagined that will delay
the work longer than this date.
The committee find it difficult to prop
erly express their pleasure as to the at
titude of the, gentlemen they went to
confer with. They found them to; be
possessed of a determination that could
not obtain but upon a fixed and long
continued purpose, and that determina
tion would not be satisfied ehort of see
ing the end of this long-drawn-out pro
ject. Contemplating the impertinences,
the unjust accusations and .ever ready
suspicions that have sought our congress
man as a target for many years past, the
committee silently but unanimously
agreed that if possible at this late day
tbey should be set right before the peo- j
pie of the commonwealth.'. Nothing can
exceed the interest and activity displayed
by Senator Mitchell to complete the
locks, 'and he has an efficient and will
ing colleague in the person of Engineer
Fisk. - '

Accidental Death..
The coroner's jury in the case of John
Swenson, whose dead body was: found
near the door of his residence at Cliflon
a few days ago, yesterday returned a
verdict of "accidental death.'? The ver?
diet "is considered "a, singular . one,
inasmuch as all. the circumstances seemed
to' indicate1 that ' Swenson ' had been
murdered. ," The -facts . that the gun
with. which the' killing was done was
found several feet away from where the
body lay ; the forcing open of the door
of Swenson's house, aud the testimony
of Dr. Fulton that the dead man's xoat
could not have been powder burned to
such an extent unless the weapon, when
discharged, was at least two feet distant,
are. in the- opinion of many Astorians
difficult to reconcile ' with the idea of
"accidental death."s "' ' v
' The flret extensive shipment of kao

now being made from Ashland. The Pa
cific Pottery Company of Portland has
contracted for the delivery, of 20 -tons of
this kaolin at the depot at Ashland for
shipment, to Portland and nee in the
manufacture of pottery by the company.
There are almost unlimited quantities of
the kaolin rock on the Dead Indian
mountain, about' J2 miles east of Ash
laud, and should, this test of its value
prove satisfactory, it may result In the
steady use of it at Portland and the es
tablishment of extensive pottery works
