EVERYONE WAS GLAD.
The Whole To-a-n Turns Out to ' Honor
the Conqueror.
The demonstration of citizens last
nkrht over the arrival of the victorious
team at the Astoria tournament was a
marvel of unanimity. 'It is not overesti
mating it to say that 3,000 people were
' out to welcome home the boys who won
the championship race. Strangers, in
. our city were amazed at' such an ezpres-
eion oi local priae. vv nen me steamer
. , 1 1 - II.) At i ' .
away there was set up such a screech of
whistles, and explosion of anvil shots
that the din was almost deafening. . The
boat whistle gallantly responded, and
when she tied np at the dock the team
" was greeted with such a . yell as must
have promoted a tingling of blood to
their finger tips. They were soon seated
in the omnibus which had been prepared
for their reception, and which was gaily
adorned with ribbotisand flowers. While
." being driven up they gave ample vent to
the pleasure the remarkable reception
had eivinz them bv shoutine:
;V i Rah, hoo, rah. ' ; ' ' '.
. ' Rab, hoo, rix. ' ."." .
i. vniioD nig bunuiivua
The veil of greeting was : . '. . '
-Hi, hi, b,, hup! . :
' Here come our Doys wuo ou
How sleek and nice they did them up:
The procession formed as follows :
Mavor Menefee and Chief of ' Fire De
partment Flech Faulkner,
City band. - v , . "
The victorious team.' ;
The several hose carts of the city,
drawn by citizens. :e, :
Pasinsr alonar Second street there was
a display df fireworks and illuminations.
The procession marched to the Jiaet rnu
and back to the Umatilla house, where
a grand banquet was given by the house
in their honor. Over a hundred guests
were seated at the table and the enthu
siasm was unbounded.; Toast9 were
given by Mayor Menefee, Chief Faulk
ner, Mr. . F." W. Wilson, Mr. G.-W.
Phelps, Dr. Siddall, N. 'J. Sinnott and
others, and numerous pleasant speeches
were made. Among them we select
that made by Dr. Siddail as a type of
the good cheer of the occasion : ,
Gentlemen' I am not a public speaker
and you all know it. But I always try
to do a little towards doing honor-nnto
them where honor belongs. And let me
eay that last week when the wins
ticked the sad news that our boys had
lost we were all very sorry indeed, and I
do not think I can illustrate the feeling
of those at Astoria better than to tell
vou a little Scotch story of an old Scot
who once in the days of yore left his own
dear Scotland and went abroad to gain
greater honors, (like our boys who went
to Astoria) but not being successful
returned home again. Reaching the
shore he jumped off the boat, but not
lik rtnr bovs tonizht. and fell upon the
earth .and grasped it with both hands,
exclaiming these words: "Lives there
a Soot with heart so dead who to him
self hath never said, 'Dear bid Scotland,
I love thee still.' Now, gentlemen, 1
want to plagairize a little, may 1 use the
word transpose, and say : .,' "Lives .there
a young lady in The Dalle9 with heart
so dead who to herself hath never said,
'Dear old Dalles boys, we love thee
still,'." andras Mrs. Dunaway once said,
"vou can't help yourselves." Xow in
those dark moments -
Things must have looked gloomy,
But thev might have been worse,
For they now have come back
With the largest purse. ,
So long may they live . . ' ,
With a fleet-footed pace, .
And every time win ,
Oregon's champion race. .
Mr. Wilson complimented the As-
torians in terms of high praise for their
generous treatment of the visiting
teams, and a toast . and a nearly cneer
were tendered the Astorians.
Mr. N. J. Sinnott sooke of the races
and how they were won. The close of
Mr. Sinnott's remarks was drowned in
a cheer. , ' '
During the Droeress of the festivities a
beautiful floral piece, representing a fire
man's hat, was presented from Mrs.
Mrs. Stubline & Sonl It was appropri
ately accepted and hearty cheers given j
the donors. .
The hour was late when the banquet
was concluded. ' ' !
The boys all speak in the most glow
ing terms of their treatment by the As
torians, and say the greatest desire of
those people seemed to be to do them
honor. Sneaking ot their failure to win
the first races.one of the boys says it was
due to unlucay accidents. Ihey had de
termined unon winning the champion
ship race, and when the telegram of
cheer came from The Dalles the morning
ot the event, it encouraged them
wonderfully. - . ,;
