causing tbe vehicle to capsize and pre-
cipitating its occupants into the running
stream. With great presence of mind
Mrs. Harrala clutched for ber children,
took one in each hand and held their
heads above the water, at the same time
calling loudly for help. Fortunately,
Mr. Derning who had made the crossing
bat a short time before, was within hear
ing dietance. He turned bis horses
round, started to the rescue, and arrived
not a moment too soon. Mrs. Harrala
had become unconscious and waa losing
her hold of the children. He reached
for the little ones first and then, with
difficulty, succeeded in lifting the mother
into his wagon. The latter soon recov
ered after being taken home. The only
loss to report is that of the horse that lay
down in tbe river and was drowned, and
a quantity of provisions and supplies
which Mrs. Harrala was taking across
the river to her hired bands on the farm.
Tba Bean Party.
Saturday evening abont twenty young
people and some not so young, called, by
invitation, at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Win, Morgan on the west end ot Fourth
street. The occasion was a bean party,
and the friends of Mr. and Mrs. Morgan
will long remember this evening on ac
count of tbe pleasant time they had. It
was, in the words of one that was pres
ent, "One of thb most pleasant evenings
of a life time," and took him back to the
by gone boyhood days, when in old
Missouri he used to meet with the boys
and girls in the old home state. (And by
tbe way what pleasant memories cluster
around one's native state and the scenes
of his childhood.)
The party broke up shortly before
midnight and the guests departed, wish
ing their host and hostess many happy
returns of this pleasant evening.
You ought have been (bean) there to
understand the bean part of it. It is
sufficient to say that after the bean
game the rest of tbe evening was spent
in the old time frolics of long ago when
youth and beauty met, and life seemed
to possess more joy than in these latter
days. H,
