There is a gentleman in The Dalles
whose faith in human nature has re
ceived a severe shock. Some time ago,
wishing to obtain a tenant for his farm,
lie made an arrangement with a man
who seemed to be' an honest fellow all
the more so as he was a soldier in the
Salvation Army. The arrangement be
ing made, the tenant was installed and
immediately filed a request that some
repairs be made to the house. The
landlord consented, and the expense
proved about $200. The tenant then
asked that the ranch be stocked with
hogs, and this also was done at an ex
pense of $140. Finally the owner of the
'farm desired a settlement, and after va
rious attempts to get together, it was
found that the tenant had traded the
hogs for a cow, sold the cow, spent the
money, and presented a bill for labor on
the house, which, after deductions were
made, left the landlord in debt to his
tenant $25. It is needless to say the
arrangement terminated, after having
caused an outlay of nearly $500 to the
owner of the farm.
The Orchestra Union will be at the
Baldwin opera honse on Thursday and
Friday eveningswhen it will furnish
choice selections between the acts of the
play. Effie Elleler made her appearance
at the Marquam Grand in Portland last
evening and received with an enthusiastic
welcome. The Oregonian in speaking
f the performance of "As You Like It"
said: "The enthusiasm was undoubtedly
genuine, and the favorable impression
made by Miss EUsler was attested by
. earnest rounds of applause and repeated
curtain calls at the close of every act.
The play Is peculiarly French in its ac
tion, and the characters of Camille and
Armand make demands on the vital
powers of those representing them that
are possessed by but few English-speaking
professionals. The play well pro
duced always fires and affects an audi
ence and in this Miss Elleler and Mr.
Holbrook Blinn last evening succeeded
eo well that they were honored with a
-double curtain-call" at the close of the
fourth act."
