Accident at the File Driver.
, ; An accident happened yesterday after
noon at Rockland whereby L. Sande,
foreman ot the constructing gang of the
D. P. & A. N. Co.. lost his life. At 5:30
the workmen were getting a pile in post
tion for driving. Mr. Sands himself
placed the chains upon the pile and the
engine was hoisting it. As the pile
swung into position it struck against one
of the gins the upright pieces that sap
port the hammer with such force that
the sling chain slipped and the pile
dropped vertically, a distance of four or
five feet. . Mr. Le Compt, the engineer,
seeing that the chain had slipped, called
out, 'Look out below, it is loose."
Everyone ran in different directions
from the falling timber, except Mr.
Sands who stopped and looked upward.
When the piling was near to him, he
tried to get from out its way, but it was
too late and he was struck on the head.
The injured man was conveyed across
the river and taken to the Colombia
hotel. Dr. Logan was called, but a
glance soon told him the injuries were
fatal. Mr.'Sands died about 7 o'clock,
- From the testimony before the coro
ner's jury, which was held this morning
it was gathered that Mr. Sands had been
somewhat under the influence of liquor
and to tbia fact was probably due in i
measure at least, tne accident. The de
ceased was well known in the North
west and drove the first pile in the con
struction of the O. R. & N. Co. in 1881
Twenty years ago he worked in Astoria
building a cannery in which Mr. Merrick
was interested.
uoroner .Butts summoned as a jury
Henry Clough, R. W. Crandall, C. L,
Schmidt, B. 11. Thurston, Geo. W.
Rowland and J. F. Root, who listened
to the testimony of W. S. La Corap, J.
F. Staniels, W. A. Maddron, VV. F.
Moabus, T. W. Maloney and W. E.
Waud. At the conclusion of the evi
dence the jury brought in the following
verdict : .
We, the undersigned coroner's jury
empanelled to inquire into the cause of
the death of one L. Sands, find as fol
lows :
That said L. Sands was an Ameri
can citizen, born and raised in the
state of Maine ; that he was about 48
years old, and about 5 feet 10 inches
in height, of the weight of nearly 165
pounds, light complexioned, light hair,
heavy light colored moustache and blue
eyes.
That said L. Sands while following his
occupation, that of a foreman on a pile
driver, at The Dalles, Oregon, was struck
on the head by a tailing pile, which was
the result of an unavoidable accident
and which caused his death, on the 7th
of October, 1895.
We, the jury from the evidence given,
are of the opinion that no blame at'
taches to any one.
Dated this 8th day of October, 1895.
The funeral will take place from the
undertaking rooms ot Crandall & Burget
- tomorrow morning at 9 :30.
