the United States marshals sworn in at
the instance of the General Managers
Association. He cited instances where
men were caught in the act of applying
the torch and when arrested by the
police United States marshal badges
were found on them. He said the 3,600
special deputy United States marshals
sworn in were chosen from the sewers
and the slums, and were men of no
character; that the A. R. U. bad won
the fight and that the railway managers
knew that unless public sentiment was
changed they would have to back down,
so the riff-raff of the city were pressed
into the dirty work of fire demons.
He said there were no Pullman coaches
burned, although many of the cars were
in the yards, only cheap rolling stock
and box cars being burned.
He said that when the trial is contin
ued in May, it will be shown "who the
conspirators are." Mr. Debs explained
privately that his tour is being made for
the purpose of raising money to pay the
costs of the suit and to carry the ca.se on
appeal. He expects that the United
States supreme court, in full bench as
sembled, will hand down its decision,
which will be final and will let Mr. Debs
and the railway employes know just
where they stand..
Claimed Klghty Victims.
Evanbton, Wyo., March 21. It is ex
pected it will take a few days before the
bodies in the Central Pacific mine at the
canyon, will be reached. The explosion
wrecked the power-plant and several
buildings, entailing a heavy loss.
The best information obtainable places !
the number of victims at 80. Two
bodies havs been taken out of the slope
by rescuers who claim further progress
is impeded by caves.
The explosion is believed to have been
caused by sparks from a blast setting
fire to the dust. It is said the mine was
wholly free from gas.
In addition to the 80 mentioned, it is
believed 10 lost their lives in the power
house. A searching party is now ex
ploring the slopes of the mines. Gen
eral mourning prevails throughout the
place and nearly all the woman and
children are assembled at the scene of
the disaster awaiting the news of dear
ones. Half a dozen bodies are already
lying in the improvised deadhouse.
The bodies of the following have been
recovered : Willard Brown, Baptist Ju
lian, James Limb, Angel Dermodi, all
married, having big families, and two
boys, Willian Grieves and a son of J.K.
Slay.
The following married men with large
families are known to have been in the
mine: Henry Burton, Samuel Holston,
George Hardy, -David Lloyd, William
Sellers, sr., Thomas Hutchinsen, Samuel
Bates, Walter Miller, Henry Scotchren,
Aaron Butt, George Cricket, Hugh Sloan,
William Morris and the following young
men: John Morris, William Graham,
ir., Marshall Langton, George Hymes,
John G. Locke, Albert Clark, David
Lowry, jr. The greater part of the men
who perished are covered with debris at
the seventh level, where they were gath
ered awaiting a man trap. Work is
being pushed with all possible speed to
uncover the dead. There is no fire in
the mine.
.-. Expresses No Surprise.
Washington. March 20. Persons
familiar with the course of Hawaiian
affairs in congress express no surprise at
the recall of Thurston. Members of
both houses who supported the policy of
the administration in Hawaiian matters
made no secret of their dissatisfaction
with the alleged course of Thurston in
furnishing information to friends of his
government for use in debates. Mc
Crearcy, chairman of the house commit
tee on foreign affairs, is said to have
been considerably provoked at Thurs
ton's activity in matters before congress
and the story goes that he told G res
ham of Thurston's frequent presence at
the capitol, and bis belief that he was
furnishing the opponents of the admin
istration with their facts and figures for
use on the floor. Gresham refused to
day to make any comments whatever on
the report concerning Thurston's recall.
. On Behalf of Armenians.
London, March 20. Francis Seymour
tStevenson, M. P., chairman of the Anglo-Armenian
Association, on behalf of
the Tiflis Armenians, will present to
Mr. Gladstone, when the latter returns
r to London, the copy of the Armenian
gospels inscribed upon vellum, which is
to accompany the address to the ex-premier,
now being signed by the Armeni
ans there. In a recent letter, Mr. Glad
's tone says he has abandoned hope that
the condition of affairs in Armenia will
change for the better.' The sultan, he
' declares, is no longer worthy of the
courtesy' of diplomatic usage or Christ
tian tolerance. . The ex-premier prom
iBes that when the gospels are formally
presented to him on bis return to Lon
don, he will deliver a rallying address
on benall ot tne Armenians.

Sounds Like Old Times.
One of those frequent happenings a
barroom fight occasioned by a too free
indulgence of stimulants ' took place
about 1 o'clock yesterday morning at the
Mann corner and which resulted in a
number of black eyes, broken noses and
swelled heads. The fight has more than
a passing significance inasmuch as one
of the principals, Eben P. Torrey, here'
tofore the champion "scrapper" of the
town, was badly worsted.
At the time of the commencement of
hostilities there were assembled a large
crowd of all-round "good men," husky
miners, who are open for an engagement
at any time. Thomas Murrey and Eben
Torrey with others were at the iar and
engaged in a parleying of words, when
it is said Torrey, as he has many times
done on previous occasions, struck the
first blow, landing on Murrey's eye.
Murrey gathered himself and went at
Torrey like a whirlwind, landing heavy
on Torrey 's nose and eyes and felling
him to the floor. The first blow that
Murrey struck was a stunner and Tor
rey, to the surprise of thoee present,
showed the "white feather," by asking
for quarter. This made Murrey more
incensed tban ever, since he had not yet
started in on his man, and be hit him
harder than ever. At this juncture Ed.
Farrell, a peace maker, stepped up and
was in the act of separating the men,
when Dan Halisay struck him a fearful
blow over the eye. Farrell, who is
somewhat of a fighter himself, then went
for Halisay and the way be done him up
was a pleasure to all the eye witnesses.
A stop to the row was made when Jack
Monahan stepped in and demanded
peace.
As a result of the "scrap" Torrey is
now confined to his bed with a broken
nose, eyes swollen shut and generally in
a badly UBed np condition. Murrey has
only a slight discoloration of one eye and
Farrel and Halieey are laid up for re
pairs. Chief Lamb has caused warrants of
arrest to be issued and they, will be ser
ved upon Torrey, Murrey and Hahsey as
soon as practicable and a full investiga
tion of the affair made in Judge Pack
wood's court. ..
The general sentiment seems to be
that Torrey got just what he has long
been looking for and that Halisey should
be heaviry fined for the part he took in
the affair. His attack on Farrell was
cowardly in the extreme. Baker City

'Perhaps you would not think so, but
a very large proportion of the diseases
in New York comes from carlessnes
about catching cold, "says Dr. Cyrus Ed
son. ' fit is such a simple thing and so
common that very few people, unless it
is a case of pneumonia, pay any atten
tion to the cold. New York is one of
the healthiest places on the Atlantic
Coast and yet there are a great many
cases of catarrh and consumption which
have their origin in this neglect of the
simplest . precaution of every day fife.
The most sensible advice is, when you
have one get rid of it as soon as possible.
By all means do not neglect it." Dr. Ed-
son does not tell you how to cure a cold
but we will. It will relieve the lungs,
aid expectoration, open the secretions
and soon effect a permanent cure. 50

The continued dry weather, has not
been favorable for the placer miners,
particularly those who depend upon
working the rich gulches and among the
smaller streams where water is expected
only during a few months in the year
during the winter season. Those who

mountains to supply water during a
longer season, are all right for there is
