Shiploads of Flour.
8an Fhancisco, March 13. The
steamer City of Peking sails tomorrow
for China and Japan, and all of her
' available space for freight has been
taken. The principal item of her big
cargo will be flour, and there has been a
scramble for room for this article. It
has been learned that contracts are being
made for flour shipments on both the
Pacific Mail and Occidental & Oriental
steamers as far ahead as May 1st.
The reason given for this rush for
' freight space on the part of flouring men
. is the demaud for room made by Port
land millers. Strange as it may seem to
' San Franclscians, flour is being manu
factured in Oregon and shipped to Hong
Kong by way of San Francieco, and put
on the Oriental market to compete with
the products of California. Oregon
people are shut out from shipping by the
Canadian and North Pacific steamers,
for the reason that those lines are carry
ing all the cargo they can handle. With
Puget sound shutout from them, Oregon
mil era had only one recourse left and
that was to ship by the Pacific Mail and
Occidental & Oriental lines.
What arrangement has been made
with .the Pacific Coast Steamship Com
pany to transport flour to San Francisco
is a secret. A special rate is understood,
has been given to Oregon manufacturers
by local China lines, which enables them
to compete with California mills. The
latter naturally have the preference,
when it comes to shipping, for the reason
that they are the direct supporters of the
Pacific Mail and Occidental & Oriental
lines, and also because they pay a high
rate. To shut out Portland men to as
(Treat an extent as possible nearlv all the
flour space has been engaged on steamers
to sail between this date and May.
Antt-Toxine of Tetanus.
New York, March 14. Before the
Medico-Legal society a paper was read
last night by Paul Gibier, director of the
Nev York Pasteur institute, in which. he
presented the interesting facts of a dis
covery in which he claimed that anti
tozine of tetanus is a positive preventive
if not an absolute remedy for lockjaw.
He entered at length into- the details of
the preparation of the anti-tozine, and
cited numerous cases where the intro
duction of the wonderful fluid into the
system both prevented lockjaw and eff
ected cures.
Through a large microscope, which
Dr. Gibier bud previously set upon the
platform, his hearers were enabled to
peep at magnified baccilli of tetanus with
which he bad charged the glass. The
observers, many of whom thus took their
first object lesson in the study ot bacter
iology, saw through the glass myriads of
globelike objects apparently as big as
peas, bat iu reality invisible to the
naked eye.
"These are the globes which produce
the terrible tetanus," said Dr. Gibier.
"The baccilli of tetanus cover all sections
of the earth inhabited by man or beast.
The germs are indigenous, I might say,
to the soil where man or animal lives.
Particularly in the stable myriads and
myriads of these germs of disease have
their being. The horse, more than any
other animal, is susceptible to tetanus,
and this may be accounted for from the
fact that the filth of the stable is more
conductive to ' the development of the
tetanus baccilli than any other condition.
"The disease is not contracted by in
halation. It is the result of the germs
being introduced into a wound or open
ing of the skin. Once in the wound the
germs of tetanus thrive wonderfully, and
in a few days produce that awful con
dition which results in the stiffening of
the muscles of the jaw, terrible rigidity
of frame and ends in death.' V
Dr. Gibier quoted statistics showing
that 65 per cent of the cases of tetanus
resulted fatally, theBe figures including
deaths on the battlefield and in railway
accidents. The development of the
tetanus among victims of railroad acci
dents, he said, was due to the introduc
tion of the germ charged rail into the
wounds.
Pacific Coast Wheat for Burope Via the
Isthmus.
Minneapolis, Minn., March 13. An
experimental shipment of Pacific coast
wheat from Portland, Or., to Liverpool
by way of Panama, undertaken by F. H.
Peavey & Co., of this city bids fair to be
a success. The firm today received mail
advices from Colon that the transship
ment had been effected at the istbmns
without injury. i
The new route saves the long voyage
around the Horn. It was a question
whether the wheat would not be spoiled
by the weather it would encounter in
crossing the isthmus, bat this fear is
now proved groundless, and it is prob
able that much of the coast wheat will
go by this route in future.
