. The weather for the past week has
been lovely. Farmers are scouring up
their implements for. their spring seed
ing. 'The' grand concert Saturday evening
was a grand success. Great praise is
due the committees in arranging the hall
and beautifying the stage. For the oc
casion the walls behind the curtain were
bung with choice pictures, which lent
beauty and culture to the scene, together
with the ease and gracefulness of the
actors in performing their several parts,
and no doubt has cast an impression on
the memory of the large audience that
time itsell cannot efface. The only
drawback we noticed was the scarcity of
1 seats and standing room. Still the au
dience behaved in a manner showing
their interest was still centered on the
stage, where the harmony group of sing
ers, under the leadership of Prof. Mc
Greagor, with" Miss Nellie Allen as or
ganist, discoursed the sweet strains of
melody, as well as harmony, throughout
the evening, not forgetting the interlude
of violin and guitar contributed by C.
C. and D. Doyle. We will here men
tion a few of the names of those that
had contributed to the evening's enter
tainment in the way of recitations, dia
logues, etc. : Ashford Ferguson, George
Ryan, Robert Ryan, Charles Thompson,
Mrs. Laura Thompson, Miss Bessie
Hastings, Miss Luella Harris, Lulu Tay
lor, Clara Williams, Ollie and Ruby
Wagner, Fred Keller, Gus Folmer, John
Ryan, Harvey Smith, Myrtle and Ida
Patterson and Ivy Leabo. We may
have omitted some of the names of those
taking part, as'we have not the list at
hand at the time of this writing. The
committee in charge express thei
thanks to those who contributed
make the entertainment a success. The
receipts of the evening from a 15-cent
admission amounted to $10, part of the
proceeds being used to pay the expenses
of the evening, the balance beirjg turned
over to -the school district, whose build
ing the class bad used for their meeting
all winter. The receipts for the evening
would have been much larger were
not for an opposition dance, gotten up
for the occasion, at the residence of Dea
con Angel, which drew a few of the
lovers of that sport hither.
The harmony class will appear again
before the public May 1st, at Williams
grove, on 8-Mile, where arrangements
have been completed for a grand May
day party there. The several commit
tees will give ample notice of arrange
ments later on.

Tragedy at Sparta.
A bloody tragedy occurred at Sparta,
In the eastern part of Union county last
Thursday evening at 4:30 o'clock in
which George E. Chamberlain shot and
killed James George and seriously
wounded L. A. Lurchin. The parties
had had a misunderstanding about min
ing ground previous to the killing, but
it is thought the bad feeling had been
healed.
Lurchm was working alone in one
claim and George and bis 15-year-old
son in another about three hundred
ards from Lurchin. Chamberlain ap
peared on the bank overlooking Lirchin
with a Winchester shot gun loaded with
buckshot, and while Lurchin'a back was
toward him shot him, the leaden mis
siles hitting Lurchin in the neck. Lur
chin fell to the ground and Chamberlain
evidently thought he had killed him
The . murderer then went to where
- George was at work. On his approach
the boy spoke to Chamberlain and said
"Did you get your grouse?" Cham
berlain replied : "Yes, I killed the
d n s of a b and I killed him
hard." Following this he took deliber
ate aim at George, who was down in a
cut, and fired, the contents of the gun
bitting George in the bead, killing him
instantly. The boy. started and ran and
Chamberlain fired one shot after him
but without effect. The boy hurried to
Sparta and told of the occurrence.
The murderer was tracked in the snow
quite a distance when all traces of him
were lost and up to the going to press no
news of him bad reached -the sheriffs
office. Union Republican.
