DlMappo1"1'' in love and despondent,
Miss Caroline P. Marker ended her life
nto::0 last evening by Jumping from
the Stark-street ferry into the waters of
the Willamette river.
Khe left her home at No. 153 Thir
teenth street about 4 o'clock yesterday
afternoon, luavlng a note for her sititer,
saying:
"I can't withstand the impulno.
Good-bye. Cahui."
Khe hoarded the ferry at the West
Side approach, and walked nervously
up and down inside the north rail of
the ferry until a littlo past the mid
dle of the stream, when she loaped over
Ittard. L. L. Flynn, an extraman in truck
company No. 7, who was on the boat,
was the first to collect himself and offer
asBiHtanco. Flynn Jumped overboard
and caught the girl before she had sank.
Ho succeeded In holding ber head out of
the water for several minutes, while a
rowboat from the shore was rapidly pro
ceeding to the rescue. While the row
boat was yet quite a distance from
thorn Flynn sank with the girl, but a
moment later arose, still holding to his
burden. Finally, however, becoming
exhausted, the body of the girl slipped
from bis clutches, and Flynn himself
was oulv saved by a man named Daniels
jumping from the rowboat nnd catching
him as he sank.
Tho body of tho girl sank to the bot
torn, and although tho rowboat was
kept in the vicinity for several minutes
It did not rice to the surface. J.eturu-
Ing to the shoro, a party with FrnP'
pling irons went out, followed shortly
after by Hugh Brady, the most success
ful grappler in Portland. He grappled
from o'clock to 10 last eight without
success, and returned to the work
shortly after daylight this morning. At
8 :45 his efforts were rewarded and the
body of the unfortunate young lady was
recovered. The body was found within
a few yards of the spot where it sunk
the last time. One of the grappling
hooks caught in her hair, another in her
coat and one in her open umbrella.
which she still clutched in ber hand.
The remains were brought to the west
nliore and Coroner Hughes notified
The body was at once removed to the
morgue where an inquest was held at 11
o'clock this morning
Miss Harker was 22 years of age, and
was engaged to marry a gentleman re
siding in California, named James T.
liurtchaelL Mr. Burtchaell was here
two years ago, but the young people
were not engaged until after that time,
Since aliout April 1st, Miss Harker has
been very nervous and molanclioly.
The verdict was to the effect that she
came to her death by drowning in the
Willamette river and that she com
mitted suicide in a fit of despondency.
There was no evidence before the jury
to justify an ofliclal censure of any one
on tho ferry for not taking more active
measures to rescue the youug lady.

km of Smell la boy.
It has often been proven that dogs
are able to track their masters through
crowded streets, where it would be im
possible to attribute their accuracy to
anything except the sense of smell
alone. Mr. Romanes, the naturalist,
once made some interesting experi
ments as to this wonderful power, as
exhibited in his own dog. In these
tests, the naturalist found that his
dumb friend could easily follow in the
tracks of his master, though he was far
out of sight, and that too, after no less
than eleven persons had followed,
stepping exactly in the tracks made by
Mr. Romanes, it being the deliberate
intention to confuse the senses of the
poor dog if possible. Further experi
ments proved that the animal tracked
the boots Instead of the man, for when
Mr. Romanes put on new footgear the
dog failed entirely.
