We clip the following from the Catho'
lie Sentinel. It is the address cf wel
come delivered recently on the occasion
of the the visit of Archbishop Riordan,
of San Francisco, to the Nofro Dame,
Indiana, University. Mr. N. J. Sinnott,
son of Col. Sinnott, of this city had the
honor of being selected from among be
tween six hundred and seven hundred
students to deliver the address :
Most Rkv. ARniRisiioi-: This ago is
somewhat hypocritical, and it often
happens that honeyed words, welcoming
the coming and Seeding the parting,
are only on the lips and do not come
from the tnie sentiments of an affection
ate heart. Yes, 'tis true that the warm
grasp of the hand and expressions of
welcome are frequently mere formalities
demanded by custom or conventional
decorum. Rut it Is needless for mo to
assure you. with nit candor, that the
warm greeting extended to you by tho J
siuuenis oi .oire mrae is vy no int-mis
a mere perfunto-y duty. A glance
around you suffices to dispel any impres
sion of that character. The counte
nances of all betoken the esteem, rever
ence and affection we have for him who
but a few short years ago went forth
from thae walls blessed with Notre
Dame's choicest gift, and who now re
turns clad in the purest insignia of a
heavenly trust. It s but natural that
we feel a just pride in Notre latnes
worthy son, the illustrious prelate des
tined to guide "westward the course of
emj4re of God's church to the very
Golden Gato of the Pacific.
Most Reverend Archbishop, though
two years have passed since yti were

visit rema'ins IndeJIibly fixed in our
hearts; it is one of the sweet recollec
tions axsociated with the pleasant

It may be welt to explain here that in
this sectien of the country sheep are
kept In large flocks or bands of from
fifteen hundred to two thousand each,
and graze on the public domain : and
not, as in most of the eastern states, in
bunches, we would say, of 'fifty or a
hundred which are kept in a pasture.
During the greater part of the year the
sheep are kept on the prairie but during
four or five months in summer and au
tumn they are taken to graze on the
fresh feed in the mountains. Sometimes
we hare to drive them fifty or a hun
dred miles to the mountains. As it is in
the mountains while driving that the
life is most interesting, I will deal prin
cipally with these time.
We set out a packer, a herder and
two or throe dogs, w ith a band of sheep.
