HISTORY FORUM: The original telegraph system in the Gorge is the topic of the fourth Regional History forum at the Original Wasco County Courthouse. Presenters Dave and Helen Wand and Larry McGinnis live east of Troutdale. They have been finding traces of the original telegraph system that ascend- ed from the Sandy River and continued east to The Dalles following an old Indian trail and will give a presentation titled “Finding the Wire Trail: Early Instant Communication in the Gorge.” Program begins at 1:30 p.m. in the upstairs courtroom of the 1859 courthouse, 410 W. 2nd Place, The Dalles. Admission is free, cookies and coffee will be served. The final history forum is Saturday, Feb. 29. SATURDAY BINGO: Saturday night bingo at the Mid-Columbia Senior Center, 1112 W 9th Street, The Dalles, on Feb. 1st. Plus, an additional $750 payout for a blackout in 53 numbers or less on the final game. Minimum buy-in is $10. It is phoning the Hood River area attempting to sell article plaques, according to employ- ees at 2nd Wind Sports. Neither The Dalles Chronicle nor The Hood River News have any association with this company. And 800notes.com has a thread of comments stating that the company has solicited people around the country using this same technique with other publication names. Most are chalking it up to a telemar- keting scam. Marc Schmid at 2nd Wind said their business had been solicited by phone at least four times in the past two days, and the caller identifies himself as “Ralph” and seeks confirma- tion of a purchase. The phone number 203-292-0500 tracks back to Fairfield, Connecticut, he said. College announces new SBDC director CGCC welcomes Greg Price as the new director of the Small Business Development Center. Greg has 20 years of business development expe- rience. He is an entrepreneur, small business owner and has worked in sales, marketing, policy, and many years in consulting for com- pany of all kinds. He earned his master’s in business administration from Portland State University where he was also a part-time pro- fessor in the graduate school of business. Greg Price Sherman County Cultural Coalition begins grant cycle OBITUARIES Applications for the 2020 spring grant cycle for Sherman County’s Cultural Coalition will be accepted beginning March 1. Straub) died peace- fully in her home on Feb. 3, 2020, in The Dalles, Ore., at the age of 63. Jackie was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She is survived by her husband of 21 years, Guillermo “Pollo” Flores Pacheco; son, Adam Jones of The Dalles; grandchildren, Isaac, Aden and Madison Jones; brothers, Charles Sterling of Oregon and Mickey Sterling of Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, Janice Mae (n. Lewis) Straub and Oliver Robert Straub, and her son, Jay Jones. Jackie was born Jan. 17, 1957, in Playa del Rey, Calif., to Janice and Oliver Straub, and graduated from Hood River High School in Hood River, Ore. In addition to raising two sons, she was a hard worker all her life. She was initially employed by Jantzen, and then worked at Luhr Jensen for 27 years. After Luhr Jensen, she returned to school at Colum- bia Gorge Community College where she trained to become a medical assistant. She worked as a certified medical assistant at both One Community Health and finally at Mid-Columbia Medical Center, Internal Medicine. Jackie loved visiting with and going on outings with her family and friends. She was an accom- plished seamstress, making clothing for her family, and was well know for the many blankets she made for friends and family to welcome new babies into the world. She also loved all animals, especially dogs, and would frequently donate to animal causes. She was a kind and generous soul who will be greatly missed by all who knew her. A Celebration of Life will be held at Sorosis Park in The Dalles on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020, at noon. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jackie’s life.
