The Dalles Riverhawks
traveled to Sam Barlow High
School to compete against
6A teams from Sandy and
Sam Barlow in a three-team
dual last Thursday and both
groups placed second overall
in the meet.
“This was probably the
best meet we have had so
far this year,” TD head coach
Derek Shortt said. “Our
swimmers posted personal
bests in 23 individual events.
Additionally, the girls 200-
yard medley relay team and
the boys 400-yard freestyle
team swam their best times.”
On the 200-yard medley
squad were Kendall Webber,
Hannah Haight, Bree Webber
and Lydia DiGennaro.
They produced a 2:11.82 to
take third place, while the
boys group consisting of
Bryce Harris, Xander Kirby,
Michael Cole and Will Evans
churned out a 3:49.30, which
placed them first overall.
“The men were slightly
behind the Sam Barlow relay
team for the last 100 yards,”

coach Shortt said. “Will hit
the water as the anchor
swimmer and had a blister-
ing 54-second split, pulling
ahead of the last Sam Barlow
swimmer for a come-from-
behind first-place finish.”
DiGennaro maintained
her scorching efforts in the
50-yard freestyle, where she
pulled out a victory after
her 26.78, and the freshman
earned second place in the
100-yard backstroke 1:13.22.
Kendall Webber slashed
7.76 seconds off her previous
500-yard freestyle time for
second place with a 5:57.26,
Haight scored third (6:41.29)
and Paige Compton notched
fifth place (6:54.50), both per-
sonal-best times in the event.
Addison Little racked up
a pair of personal records
in both of her individual
events, cutting seven seconds
off of her 100-yard freestyle
time (1:19.40) and adding a
three-second improvement
in the 100-yard backstroke
(1:38.63).
Also scoring two personal
records on the day was senior
Hanna Rodriguez, who did it
in both the 200-yard (2:13.72)
and 100-yard freestyles
(1:15.19).
Kendall Webber placed
second in the 200-yard
freestyle (2:11.72), and in

medley (2:47.23), Haight
scored third in the 100-yard
breaststroke (1:22.15), and
the girls 400-yard freestyle
relay team of Haight, Lydia
Evans, Compton and Abbas
combined for a 4:49.05 to get
third place.
Taking third place in the
200-yard freestyle relay were
Rodriguez, Lydia Evans,
Izabella Montesanti and
Compton (2:17.50).

the junior varsity 50-yard free-
style (39.32), and the 400-yard
freestyle relay race, Fuller,
Little, Izabella Montesanti and
Rodriguez had a fifth-place
marker of 5:50.07.
“We were a bit taken aback,
but super happy, by how well
the kids swam today,” said
assistant coach Pat Shortt.
“The kids have been putting
in some hard workouts with
a lot of yardage for the past
couple of weeks. Usually this
is the point in the season
where we see a lot of plateaus
in terms of times.”
On the boys side, Harris,
Skyler Coburn, Cole and
Evans hit top honors in
the 200-yard freestyle relay
(1:41.84), and the group
of Grant Loughmiller, Jose

Comini ended up fifth in the
same event (2:11.04).
In the 200-yard medley
relay, Coburn, Hoover, Kirby
and Jonathan Snodgrass

style (55.73), and Will Evans
was second (24.90), Harris

(2:45.79).

place in the junior varsity 50-

That win also marks the
first time since the 2013-2014

The final score is much
closer than what the first
three quarters showed, as the
Riverhawks started the first
two frames with runs of 12-3
and 13-3 to jump ahead by a
25-6 halftime margin.
The Dalles led 33-13
through three periods, but
Pendleton made things
interesting with a 19-4
fourth-quarter flurry for the
final margin.
In all, the No. 20-ranked
Hawks sank 11 field goals,
five 3-pointers, and made 10

sists, and Jenna Miller hit two
fourth-quarter free throws
and totaled two points and
added two rebounds, three
steals, three assists and five
pass deflections.
“The girls played great
and they were up the
entire game,” TD head
coach Brian Stevens said.
“We were very patient and
passed the ball well. The
girls are excited about this
start of league.”
Pendleton hit 10 field
goals, five 3-pointers, and
made 7 of 10 free throws.

No. 12 Ridgeview (11-6, 3-0)
Tuesday in their first home
game since Jan. 14. After that,
they are in Hood River (1-14,
0-3) with a start time of 6:30
p.m. Friday.

Conference boys basketball
game Friday in Pendleton.
All told, TD hit 25 of 64
from the floor, 2 of 17 from
long distance, and made 7 of
9 free throws.
Styles DeLeon led the
Hawks with 22 points, four re-

Mother Nature gives TD skiers a big challenge
Five individuals
put together
two-run
times at Ski
Bowl East
Rodriguez

The Dalles Chronicle
The weather was warm
and rainy at Ski Bowl for the
Challenger Course at Mount
Hood Meadows.
Lucy Booth, Hannah
Biehn and Ella Smith all
had top-20 times and Grey
Roetcisoender and Paul
Kelly led The Dalles boys ski
team in Saturday’s slalom
race.
“A lot of preparation was
put into the race hill named
Challenger, and as the name
says, it was a challenger
both physically (icy and
long course), and mentally,
with rain sometimes coming
down sideways,” TD head
coach Dane Klindt said.
Booth had the girls team’s
best finish of the day at
11th place with her first run
going for 48.25 seconds, and
then she cut down time in
the second run (47.82) for
a combined final time of
1:36.07.
Biehn then hit the slopes
for a 55.64 opener and
added a 53.69 to get a 1:49.33
and 16th place.
Smith motored to a
1:51.56 by following up a
55.15 first run with a 56.41
to take 19th place out of 20
two-run finishers.
“Lucy stepped up and
skied a great race,” Klindt
said. “Right behind her was
Hannah. She has been work-
ing hard on her technique
and it’s really starting to
show. Ella completed both
her runs to give the girls
their three times for a team
score.”
The other 60 skiers were
either disqualified, did
not start or did not fin-
ish, including TD’s duo of
Fiona Dunlop and Ashley
Quisenberry, who did not
finish her first attempt, but
had a second-run mark of
55.69.
“Ashley fell during her first
run and then came back in
her second try to get under a
minute,” Klindt said. “I was
proud of all the girls. It was
icy and they all stepped up
to the challenge.”
Hood River Valley posted
four top-7 participants, with
Eva Jones and Marisa Riggert
ending up inside the final
three places.
In two runs, Jones tallied a
1:23.17 to nab second place
behind Franklin’s Annelise
Norkitis (1:21.09).
Riggert ended up third at
1:24.92, Julia Olsen (1:27.76)
took sixth, Alessandria
Ferrari (1:28.29) notched
seventh place to round out
the Eagle starters.
Standing out for the
Riverhawk boys was
Roetcisoender, a freshman.
In his opening attempt, he
put up a 50.02 and he tacked
on a 51.02 on his second rush
to end up at 1:41.04 for 11th
place in the field of 85 skiers.
Overall, just 17 partic-
ipants made it through
two runs and Kelly totaled
1:52.94 to get 15th place, first
with a 55.81 then wrapping
up with a 57.13.
“The boys’ standout was
Grey. He put two great runs
together to get his best fin-
ish,” Klindt said. “Paul had
the only other completed
runs, so the team didn’t get
a score.”
Cooper Klindt (53.15, 21st)
and Henry Perez (54.33,
24th) each finished their first
runs, but were unable to get
a second shot. Peyton Beeks
did not place initially and
went for a 1:01.37 on his sec-
ond rush, which placed him
24th, and Austin Weir rattled
off a 55.17 on his second try
after not completing his first
dash. “Austin and Peyton
had great second run, along
with both George Harrison

and Bucky Wilkonson, who
had some great runs going,
but struggled in both.”
Franklin’s Nils Streedain
won the boys division after
a 1:10.02, and HRV skiers
Aidan Gonzales-Haynie
(1:34.35) and Parker Dey
(1:34.51) had the boys’ only
two-run efforts.
In the junior varsity event,
eighth grade racers Cooper
Klindt ended up fifth and
Henry Perez got sixth place.
The skiers have a slalom
event planned at 9 a.m.
Saturday on the Stadium
Course, and then they com-
pete in a giant slalom race
on the Reynolds Course at
