A8 Weekend of January 25-26, 2020 The Dalles Chronicle ‘Dammed to Extinction’ Filmmakers Michael Peterson and Steven Hawley will present at Big Sky TEDx in Montana Jan. 28 on the issues raised in their award-winning documen- tary film, “Dammed to Extinction.” This film chronicles the trials and tribulations of a Pacific Ocean orca pod whose existence is threat- ened by a dwindling Chinook salmon population as a result of damming the Snake River. The film was able to raise $5,000 through a crowdfund- ing campaign to present at BigSky. “Dammed to Extinction” BIRTHDAYS has also been accepted to the Wild & Scenic Film Festival. Each year, Wild & Scenic draws top filmmakers, celeb- rities, leading activists, social innovators and well-known world adventurers to Nevada City and Grass Valley, Calif. A local screening in Hood River is planned on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. at Hood River Valley High School. This event will be a fund- raiser benefiting the HRVHS Theater Department. The composer for “Dammed to Extinction,” Duncan Krummel, is a Hood River native and grad- uate of HRVHS. OBITUARIES Sherry Holliday August 6, 1944 ~ January 15, 2020 Sherry Holliday was born on August 6, 1944, in Hood River, Ore., to Ed and Cleo Adams. She died January 15, 2020, at her home in Maupin, Ore., with close family present. She was 75 years old. Sherry started school in Tygh Valley, Ore. Her parents divorced and her mother remarried. The family traveled for work in the construction busi- ness. Her high school atten- dance began in Maupin but she graduated from Sandy High School in 1962. She and her mother both attended beauty col- lege in Bend and Port- land, Ore., enjoying a close bond that she often talked about. In 1964, she married Gary Petty and went to work at Textronix in Beaver ton, Ore. They were blessed with a son, Tony, in 1972. After a di- vorce, Sherry reconnected with a high school sweet- heart, Ron Holliday, and they married in 1978, blending a family of 3 boys. Sherry began a long service to her community by becoming a volunteer EMT in 1980 and joining the Southern Wasco Coun- ty ambulance service. She was appointe d se cre - tary/manager, a job she dearly loved. She served on the ambulance for 34 years, getting grants and purchasing many ambu- lances over the years, and a new ambulance garage. She helped write the origi- nal ASA plan for Wasco County and then years later helped rewrite it. Sherry was elected to the Maupin City Council and then Mayor in 1987, the town’s first woman to hold that office. She was re-elected to the position seven times, serving 13 years. In 2003, she was ap- pointed Wasco County C o m m i s s i o n e r, a g a i n breaking the glass ceiling as the first woman to serve that role. She served a total of ten years, retir- ing January 3, 2013.
