This year’s enrollment of 145,264 Oregonians is a two percent decrease from last year’s 148,180. During the 45-day-long open enrollment period in November and December, people can buy health insur- ance for the upcoming year, and many receive subsidies, through HealthCare.gov established by the Affordable Care Act. Oregon’s uninsured rate has dropped almost 11 percent since 2009. About 94 percent of Oregonians and 98 percent of Oregon chil- dren have health insurance. “In many cases, Oregonians whose health and future might have been in jeopardy because they did not have access to insur- ance find that the plans and subsidies available through HealthCare.gov help make insurance more afford- able for them,” said Chiqui Flowers, administrator of the Oregon Health Insurance Marketplace, the state-level partner to HealthCare.gov. “Oregonians will receive the care they need and live longer, better lives because of the work done by the Oregon Health Insurance Marketplace,” said Lou Savage, Director of the Department of Consumer and Business Services, the state’s largest consumer protection and business regulatory agency, of which the Oregon Health Insurance Marketplace is a part. Semi heading north lost control of the vehicle and trailer attempt- ing to negotiate a curve, causing the trailer to jackknife. Another semi heading south clipped the trailer and also jack knifed. Steven Lloyd Yale, 28, The Dalles, was arrested Jan. 11 during a traffic stop in the 2300 block of West 14th Street and is accused of driving under the influence of intoxicants and resisting arrest. A hit and run report was taken Jan. 12 from Interstate 84 west- bound, milepost 87, after it was reported a semi had jackknifed on the on ramp. The semi was gone prior to arrival and damage was found to a concrete barrier. The semi was located by city po- lice near West 2nd and Webber streets. The incident is under investigation. Bernard Leon Predeek, 42, White Salmon, Wash., was arrested Jan. 12 during a traffic stop on Highway 197 near Bret Clodfetler Way and is accused of driving under the influence of intoxicants. Thomas Dean Svendsen September 24, 1953 ~ January 4, 2020 Thomas Dean Svendsen, 66, a longtime resident of Goldendale, Washington, passed away January 4, 2020, after losing his battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. Tom was born September 24, 1953, at Fort Lawton Hospital while his father served in Korea. Mr. Svendsen was raised in Seattle and graduated from the University of Washington -- Go Huskies! -- with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1976. He married his college sweetheart Debi Thorlakson soon after he moved to Goldendale to take a position as an engineer at the Klickitat PUD, enjoying a 33-year ca- reer before retiring in 2009 as General Manager. Tom was a champion of renewable energy and worked dili- gently on the building of the HW Hill landfill gas to energy project, wind projects in Klickitat County starting with the first large scale wind project in the nation, the Goodnoe Hills Mod II project, and contin- uing on through the White Creek Wind project. Tom was also integral on biomass generation and the be- ginnings of the planned pumped-storage project. Tom also stayed involved with in his community, first as a member of the Goldendale Jaycees and as a longtime member of the Goldendale Golf Club, serv- ing as club president for six years, and was honored for his contributions to the Jaycees and his communi- ty by being awarded a JCI Senatorship for his years of service to his community. Senatorship was estab- lished to honor and recognize outstanding achieve- ments and service of Jaycees members worldwide. Tom’s efforts were instrumental, along with all mem- bers of the Goldendale chapter of the Jaycees, with the development of Goldendale’s E’Kone Park and nu- merous community-oriented projects throughout his community. As a family Tom and Debi enjoyed entertaining friends and family at their Goldendale home and their cabin along the slopes of Mt. Hood, near Park- dale, Ore., and RV’ing with close friends. They trav- eled extensively and were veterans of cruises and touring. Tom and Debi also enjoyed their winters in Kona and with family in Yuma, Arizona. Tom is survived by his wife Debi, his parents Ed and Frances Svendsen of Seattle, brother Ted (Char- lotte), also of Seattle, daughter Kristi (Chuck) Her- ron, of Ridgefield, Washington, and son Kevin (Jen- nifer) Svendsen of Spokane and, especially, grandchil- dren Paddy and Keegan Herron and Austin and Payten Svendsen. He was preceded in death by his sis- ter Cathy and grandparents Clara and Jacob Lam- brecht and Chester and Ann Svendsen.
