ONGOING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The Dalles Meals On Wheels is in need of volunteer drivers to deliver meals to our home bound individuals. We deliver meals to over 100 people a day Monday through Friday. Seven volunteers are needed each day to ensure seniors and the disabled have access to adequate nutrition. Deliveries start around 11 a.m. Most drivers are done by noon. COMMUNITY RESPONSE: Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training comes to The Dalles in January, with three options available: Two weekends; Friday, Jan. 10, 5:30 – 9 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 11, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or Friday, Jan. 17, 5:50 p.m. – 9 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 18 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; or as a six-week series on Thursday evenings beginning Jan. 16 and ending Feb.20; or a week-long series starting Monday, March 9 through Friday, March 13, from 1 – 5 p.m. JANUARY Thursday, January 16 KIWANIS PROGRAM: Kiwanis COMMUNITY EDUCATION Show up for show dog training Do you own a dog that has the potential to be a show dog? Take that beautiful pup to the next level with a dog han- dling class. Your four-legged friend will learn about AKC conformation with an emphasis on proper gaiting and ring presentation. Columbia Gorge Community College is now offering the non-credit class “Dog Handling.” The class meets every Wednesday from Jan. 22 to Feb. 26 at the Fort Dalles Readiness Center’s drill classroom from 7 to 8 p.m. Cost is $69. Columbia Gorge Community College is offering “Ready, Set Goals for the New Year,” a non-credit class through Community Education. This class is taught by executive coach Dana Meyer. Class is Jan. 16 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Hood River-Indian Creek Campus. Cost is $99. Aspiring mobile phone photographers wanted Are you using your phone camera to its full potential? Learn how to take higher-quality images with a smart- phone and edit like a pro with iPhone apps in just two days. Get higher quality images that can be used in social media feeds or on your own website. You will also learn to make short films. The class is taught by award-winning photogra- pher Sean O’Connor. Saturday, January 18 EAGLE WATCH: 10th annual Eagle Watch at The Dalles Dam Visitor Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Watch as bald eagles roost along the Columbia River. During this event, the visitor center will be open for live raptor presen- tations, provided by the U.S. Forest Service, Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Rowena Wildlife Clinic. Visitors are wel- come and encouraged to bring their own scopes and binoculars; there will be a limited number available for use. This event is free and accessible to those with disabilities. Wednesday, January 22 LUNCH LEARNING: The Hood River Chamber of Commerce presents “New Oregon & Washington Employment Law” with Barrett Business Services Inc. in the Chamber Classroom. Betty Louise Bentley September 21, 1939 ~ December 28, 2019 Betty Louise Bentley, 80, a resident of The Dalles, Ore., died at her apartment in Flagstone Senior Living, Dec. 28, 2019. She was born Sept. 21, 1939, in Wapato, Wash., the second of four children to Gerald Louise and Francis Irlene (Wine) Bentley. She was raised in Tillamook, Ore., where she attended school. She lived for several years in Wapato, then re- turned to Crandon, Wisc., in 1947 with her parents and then the family moved to Tillamook, where she resided until 1979, when she moved to The Dalles with her parents. She resided at Flagstone since January 1, 2008. She was a longtime member of the Church of The Nazarene in Tillamook, and The Dalles. She enjoyed spending her days in the lobby at Flagstone and visit- ing with the residents. She was known as the “Lobby Greeter” by many people in the community who visit- ed at Flagstone. In August 2016 she was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation as the “Most Improved Lobby Greeter” by the Flagstone Executive Director. She is survived by two sisters, Joyce M. Murphy and Shirley A. Hafner both of The Dalles; and many nieces and nephews. A brother, Jack W. Bentley pre- ceded her in death.
