Debbie Hayes passed
away peacefully surround-
ed by family the morning
of December 9, 2019 after a
long battle with lung can-
cer. Debbie, a beloved
daughter, wife, mother,
m o t h e r - i n - l a w, a u n t ,
grandmother and friend,
known to many as
“Momma Bear.” She loved
hugs, being with her huge
family, spending time with
her “girlfriends,” reading
and visiting. Born in Roseburg, Ore. to Carol Smith
and Robert (Bob) Gregson, Debbie grew up in Culver,
Ore., for the majority of her school life. Debbie mar-
ried the love of her life Ronald Hayes on April 23, 1976
and lived in Maupin, Pine Grove and settled in Tygh
Valley for a long period. They moved to Springfield,
Ore. for Ron to once again work in the woods as the
local mill was shutting down. Their 3 children Va-
lerie, Ginger and Dusty were her pride and joy. Debbie
worked from 1991 for the Springfield School District
most of which was at Brattain Elementary as an As-
sistant and Librarian where she retired in June of
2016, a few months after her cancer diagnosis. Debbie
loved to read books to any child, she missed reading
and sharing quality time with her students and facul-
ty when she retired. Debbie enjoyed spending exten-
sive time reading to her grandchildren, especially
bedtime stories where she could snuggle up and fall
asleep with them in grandma and grandpas huge bed!
Ron and Debbie moved back to South Wasco Coun-
ty and settled in Pine Hollow in 2016 closer to beloved
friends and family. Debbie is survived by her mother
Carol Smith, 2 sisters Colleen Gregson and Shari Var-
danega (her best friend in the world), her husband of
43 years Ronald Hayes and their 3 amazing children
Valerie White, Ginger Hayes and Dusty Hayes who
blessed her with 6 incredible grandchildren whom
she loved to spoil. Kailyn & Madison are Valerie’s 2
girls Tristen, Aiden & Trevor are Dusty’s 3 boys and
Daxtyn is Ginger’s son. She is loved by everyone that
she met both in the Springfield area as well as South
Wasco County.
Memorial services will be held in Maupin, Ore., on
April 4, 2020 at the Elementary School then to the Le-
gion Hall for a potluck & celebration of life actual
time will be determined later. She wanted us all to
wait until spring for beautiful flowers and road condi-
tions to ease up a bit so her friends and family can
travel safely, as always worried about others. In lieu of
flowers donations can be made to LUNGevity Founda-
tion care of the Hayes Family.
Edythe Eileen Ryf was
the fourth of six children

Ryf. She was born May 28,
1932, in Ridgefield, Wash.,
Eileen died December 18,
2019, in Baker City, Ore.
Her childhood was full of
sibling antics, school par-
ties and dances, picking
strawberries, and a deep
love of family.
Eileen graduated from
Ridgefield High School and went on to earn her teach-
ing degree from Central Washington College in El-
lensburg, Wash. It was on a double-date during her
college years in Ellensburg, where she met a fine
young man, George Moreau – who was her friend
Betty’s date – and the rest, as they say, was history.
George and Eileen were married June 11, 1955, in
Seattle, Wash., where Eileen was teaching second
grade. The young teacher invited her entire class to
the wedding, where the happy students occupied the
front pew. George and Eileen first resided on the fam-
ily ranch in Ellensburg. Later, an opportunity came
about for the couple to stake their claim in Moro, Ore.,
where the Moreau Family then lived until 2016. Two
daughters were born to George and Eileen; Julee Ann
and Jill Marie.
Eileen taught in a number of the elementary
schools in Sherman County, but is probably best re-
membered for her role as the 5th-6th grade teacher in
Rufus. Eileen was involved with her church, 4-H, and
numerous community boards, including a reign as
Moro’s mayor. She also was appointed by Gov. Vic
Atiyeh to the Fair Dismissal Appeals Board for the
State of Oregon.
Preceding Eileen in death were her parents, John
and Gladys Ryf, four siblings; John, Rose Marie, Clif-
ford and Phyllis, and Eileen’s daughter Jill who died
in 1983 and husband George, passing in 1991.
Eileen is survived by her brother, Ed Ryf and his
wife Ellen; brother-in-law Frank Moreau; sisters-in-
law Marene Morrison and Frankie Melvin; daughter
Julee and her husband David Hicks; grandchildren
Annelle Hicks, and William Hicks and Will’s wife,
Lindsey (Timmons) Hicks.
Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m. on
January 2, 2020, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10
a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wasco, Ore., 807
Barnett Street Wasco, Oregon 97065. A luncheon at the
Wasco parish hall will be held at 11 a.m. and burial
will follow at the Moro Cemetery.

David Childs, 96, passed away at his home in The
Dalles, Ore., on December 23, 2019, just eleven days
short of his 97th birthday. He was born in Heppner,
Ore., January 3, 1923, David was raised by his father,
whom he adored, on their family farm in northern
Gilliam County.
He rode his horse six miles every day to the Olex el-
ementary school, then attended Arlington High
School, where he participated in boxing, basketball,
football and excelled in track. He was a member of
two state championship football teams, was Salutato-
rian of his graduating class, and also played bass
drum in the school band.
David attended Oregon State College to study agri-
cultural engineering, where he met and eventually
married Peggy Shelburne of Dayton. Through the
ROTC program, he was called to duty soon after Pearl
Harbor and spent months in pilot training in various
locations around the country, then shipped out short-
ly after D-Day as a P-47 replacement pilot for the 9th
Air Force 362nd Fighter Group. On his 48th combat
mission his plane was shot down by German anti-air-
craft fire. He suffered severe injuries and spent the
next six months, listed as MIA, in four different Ger-
man POW camps.
David retired at war’s end with the rank of Captain
and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross,
Purple Heart and Air Medal with 6 oak leaf clusters.
His wartime experiences are well chronicled in his
book “Wings and Tracks.”
After two years of medical care and rehabilitation
in southern California, David and Peggy returned to
Oregon State to finish their degrees, then moved to
Gilliam County to carry on and expand the family
farm, raise a family and immerse themselves in com-
munity activities.
David raised wheat, cattle and quality alfalfa hay,
then pioneered in the area with irrigated farming, en-
abling him to increase yields and grow more diverse
crops. He was named Gilliam County Soil Conserva-
tion Farmer of the Year in both 1954 and 1964 and
served on a host of ag-related boards and committees.
He also had a lifelong interest in water resource is-
sues, serving on even more boards and committees,
both locally and statewide. He was also active in
grange, school board and Arlington Port Commission
and served as board member and vice-chair of the
Bank of Eastern Oregon. He also served several years
on the Mid-Columbia Medical Center Foundation
board.
In 1988, the couple retired and moved to The Dalles,
where David channeled his energies into supporting
the Methodist Church, Kiwanis Club and “Lyin’
Fliers” group at the VA home. He was humbled and
honored to be a participant on several occasions in
The Dalles’ first class Veterans Day parade.
David is survived by his beloved wife Peggy; son
Chris (Denise) of Silverton, Ore.; daughter Kathleen
“Kit” Kamo (Curt) of New Plymouth, Idaho; grandson
David Kamo (Rhiannon); and great grandson Kobe.
A small service was held on December 24, 2019. The
family extends our sincere thanks to the many
friends and family who were able to attend David and
Peggy’s 77th wedding anniversary party on December
15, 2019 … his “last hurrah.”
